I DID IT! I do NOT have cable TV!

This may not be a big deal to some of you, but this is a big step for me and my family. We've been on our journey for while, and we'd come to this issue. It really is like taking a leap for us. We live in very mainstream suburbia and do not have any family members who have fewer than 2 TVs; most have PVRs and major digital cable packages. We worried about being 'left out' of those conversations at family gatherings and the water cooler. But we've done it! We only every had one TV with basic cable, but that costs $24/month around here! And while we were at it, we told the same company we were considering canceling our Internet service, and saved another $10 a month on that bill for the next year. This is a huge deal to me.

Now, I feel a sense of pride that I can say we do not have cable TV. Imagine how much more time we will have for reading, knitting, chatting, playing board games, etc. And, there is always the library or video store for borrowing movies occasionally. I want to shout it from the rooftops! I just told a friend of mine who lives on government assistance and she said: "we couldn't live without it".

I think I'm mostly excited because DP is on board too. I feel like I'm headed further and further away from mainstream and continue to be worried that at some point he'll just say "I'm not coming with you". So far, he continues to amaze. We just picked up *his* sling the other day And, before we get used to the savings, we're increasing DP's direct payments on his debt by the difference we're saving now.

I have no cable!

congrats! i wish i could give up cable but we justify it because we get a great package deal (we have an internet account too, which i use for my business) and because we'd spend much more money during football season going to sports bars or to parties to watch football games that don't come on network TV. horrible, i know. :

We figure our friends and family are going to think we're going broke or something. They will NOT get it at all . They might start sending money and food.

I absoluely LOVE television and I absolutely HATE television!!

We have never had cable tv because DH is very anti, but he's the first one to plop down on the couch and pick up the remote when we visit his parents! It just isn't in our budget...cable internet isn't either, but its all about choices, right? I also fear that my kids would watch too much tv if we had it, and that's just another fight I'm not willing to have.

Oh, I forgot, CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS on being cable free!!!

dh has been bugging me since we bought the house 3+ years ago to get cable. (the house we previously lived in had cable, but that's because dh's and his roommate's "bachelor pad.") i told dh that he could have cable if he called time warner, set up an appointment for it to be installed, stayed home waiting for the installation people, put the bill in his name, and paid the bill every month.

we dont have cable.

Congrats!!! We've been cable-free for 2 1/2 years now and can't imagine ever going back.

Since we really don't get any tv reception (no rooftop antennae) we're nearly tv-free. We'll watch the occasional VHS tape or DVD, but never anything network.

We spend a *lot* more time talking, playing, and reading than we ever did before.

Congrats! We just recently got rid of ours when we bought this house too. We're saving over $70 a month AND I realized how very addicted and guilt ridden that thing made me (I had the DVR and would think I 'had' to watch that recorded stuff...after all, we paid for it!)

I've started reading more, we're playing games and doing puzzles together, we're cooking more together, shooting hoops, swimming at the pool...we have time for so much more FAMILY stuff.

I can't wait to make friends again with the library. I went last night and they had to update my information because it had been so long since I visited

Check out their movie collection too. Ours has no fees (I know some do) and TONS of new release DVD's, that eases us off the cable too.

Awesome!

What we went through several years ago when we cancelled cable, is the realization of how much time we wasted. There was an adjustment period ( deprogramming-literally ) but it soon got replaced. I couldn't believe how many people thought we were nuts. It's only TV!

Now, after several years, i'm finding that I can barely stand to watch prime time TV. Even the news. The commercials drive me batty, and the shows are so pointless I can't stand it. I keep a stack of books around instead, much more entertaining to me.

There are channels that I do miss, like the history, science, some animal planet shows. But not enough to justify cable again.

I'm right there with you!

We just cancelled our cable too! Like you we just had the basic package, but it was still $31 per month (Canadian) and dh and I hardly ever watched it. Mostly only the kids watched one or two channels...and they have lots of videos and a library nearby, so I figured, we just don't need it!

I've been thinking about it for a while, and now that I made the call and cancelled it I'm really excited. I feel it's a positive step, not only because money is tight and we'll be saving, but because we will spend more time now doing more worthwhile things.

My dh and my kids complained a little bit, but that's okay, they'll get over it.

It's funny that we are going tv-free (except for videos) at the same time that my parents just got a HD TV and a fancy digital cable package...I think we're both equally excited about our changes.

Good for you! Deep down I have a desire to do that, I think it would be good for us - but its hard to imagine giving it up, we are so hooked on it.

The biggest problem is really DH - he won't give up his sports. If only there was a way to only get sports and not the rest, but alas. Also, not to mention I can't even make the games a family event because my family doesn't want to watch the game on our crappy non-HD tv.

We only have the basic (non-digital) cable, but that's $45/mo! And our cable is our internet, so that's an issue too.

Curious - what do you do for internet? Do you have DSL?

We've been cable free for two years now and I haven't regretted it once! Whenever we go to visit relatives, it's ridiculous how much more television we watch! It's so addictive-I mean, you know it's bad when you are trying to justify to yourself that it's important to watch celebrity weddings.

Anyways, congrats for going cable free-you'll love it!

We have DSL, and the totally basic land phone line.

I'm soooo jealous!!!!!!!

Maybe I'll finally get the balls to do it too...

CONGRATULATIONS!!! We've been cable free for quite awhile.

Its a big step, but you're not alone! I think its kinda sad that so many people can't imagine living without it. It's a brain drain and it eats time so fast!

IMHO its the best thing you can do for your kids.

WooHoo!! We had cable at the house we were renting when we got married but decided not to get it when we moved into our new house. So you're not alone! And it frees up a ton of time to other things that you love to do (like surfing MDC! )

Yeah, I've been a little bit surprised about the response I've gotten; so many people just "CAN'T" live without TV!
