I have access to my parents MLS, so I searched for all listings for $425K (in Mass - greater boston area basically) and sorted by living area, here are some highlights:

Newton MA - AS IS fixer upper 918 sq ft 2 bed 1 bath 0.17 acres
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70539370

New construction in Sterling, MA 1600 sq ft 3 bed 2 bath, 2 acres
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70501429

Arlington, MA - nicer looking 1000 sq ft 2 bed 1 bath 0.14 acres
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70590168

Pepperell, MA - a pretty 2400 sq ft colonial 3 bed 2.5 bath almost 2 acres
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70579595
Getting pretty far from the city (boston) at this point, but my cousin lives in pepperell and her husband does commute in at odd hours in only an hour and 15.

and on the bigger end:

Monson, MA - 3660 square feet 4 bed 3 bath, 4.61 acres
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70585372

Lowell, MA - 3400 square feet 3 bed 2 bath, 0.12 acres
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70536582
Live in the ritzy part of Lowell...

Largest Lot size for $425K:
http://www.homesforsaleinma.com/prop...m?mls=70443129
northfield, ma - 21 acres w/ a 3000 sq ft 4 bed 2 bath colonial, not bad. Western part of the state I think.

Land goes from as little as 0.17 acre for $425K (that house in newton as is is being sold as land) - to 26 Acres in Blackstone, MA or 30 in thompson, CT

Have you seen that show "what you get for the money?" they profile particular values and show you different homes across the US. It's interesting, but of course they don't tend to show you the crappy ones, just the nice ones in various areas, so you don't get a real feel for where $425K gets you a whole - oh and they tend to focus on like $600K+ I've noticed.

Not much. Only a few listings came up and they were all 2 bedroom/1 bath condos. Here's one: http://homes.realtor.com/search/list...rcnt=17#Detail

In North Dakota, you can get a fabulous house for $425,000

4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 fireplaces, 5+ acres, 3850 sq ft, hot tub, huge garage, brand new kitchen

I need to move. We found the perfect house at $550k. We can easily get financing, but can't afford the payments. Most at $425k have small lots, and I am looking for at least .5 acre.

In north Idaho...

3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Bathrooms, 5 acres, it doesn't have a lake view, but a nice panoramic view.

3 Bed, 2.5 Bath, 2,584 Sq. Ft. 0.22 acres. This is down the street from me (like 6-10 blocks?) in a newish subdivision and I think it's a rip off. Our house is older, very similar stats except we have a 1.5-2 car garage (depending on the cars and how many inches you're comfortable with in between said cars) and a bunch of gardening spaces, and appraises for like half the price.

Used to be able to find lakefront property for $400K, but not anymore.

Honestly the 450 k houses look no better than the 150 k houses. I don't get it.

It's the location baby. The land is most of the value of the property around here.

3 bed, 2.5 bath, 1700 sq ft built in '94 in Portland, Oregon

As someone else said, it's ALL about location, esp in the Pac NW! It's more about land than the house it seems..

A big house.
23 year old, 4 bed, 3 bath, 1 half bath, 4500 sqft with some land in a good school district.

Cottage Grove, OR (where I grew up): $349K gets you 3Bed, 1.1Bath (I think they mean .5Bath), and 6 acres of land

Seattle, WA (Queen Anne neighborhood, where we live now): 2 bed, 1 bath condo, $425K

*sigh* I wish I didn't love city life.

This one is 419, not even in town though, and just on a lot. http://homes.realtor.com/search/list...cnt=163#Detail

The next one that comes up is 429 and is a condo. http://homes.realtor.com/search/list...cnt=163#Detail

That about sums up my town. Beautiful place to live, love it here, not much on the market under 500K though.

BTW, it floods in Alviso every time there is an El Nino winter, and there is lots of gang activity.

Then we moved to Richmond, VA
