I was actually surprised when I did this search for my town (Takoma Park, MD) -- prices have dropped enough that there are actually several single-family homes available around this price, which wouldn't have been true a year ago.

There's one a couple of blocks from my house (I would say this is a less desirable neighborhood in my town, though the entire town is pretty popular), a 5br 3ba on .23 acres, no central a/c, it looks like a pretty small house, so I'm thinking they managed to get 5br by finishing the basement.

In a "hotter" neighborhood closer to the shops and the subway, you can either get a 3br, 2ba on .2 acres (also no central a/c), or a .19 acre unbuilt lot.

Newmarket, NH:

This is just down the street from us. We went in when they had open houses and these condos are nice! The one we saw was small and oddly shaped, though.

Wow, too funny - I grew up there!! I've never come across anyone else from there.

This is the house I always admired growing up...

http://nneren.com/view2.php?id=2656492&ref=q&price=$297,000.00&t=

$297,000 for a 4 bed/2 bath 1880's farmhouse with a great yard... that's what I'm talking about!

That said I cannot believe all of the new condos/townhomes/executive homes going up all over, it's really (in my opinion : ) destroying the town

With any luck we won't be here too much longer. I loved this town as a college aged kid but hate living here as a parent to young children. There's nothing to do and we have to drive 20 minutes to go any where. Dogs aren't allowed in any of the parks. It drives me crazy!

I do agree about some of the condos. The Cheney condos on the other side of the river are horrible. I'm glad they redid the mills, though. Better to have them useful than just empty run down buildings IMO.

That little blue house is pretty close to us. We walk past it fairly often.

We live in the city of Seattle.

$400K for a town home right off a busy street with prostitution issues:

$425K for a 2 bedroom town home in the area that I grew up:

http://www.ziprealty.com/buy_a_home/...3&source=NWMLS

$429K for a 2 bedroom house in the area that I grew up.

We paid $300K for a townhouse about 3 miles from these, in a less desirable area in north Seattle. Very basic, small houses in our neighborhood are $375-400K. It was a townhouse or a commute to work. We decided to go with the townhouse walking distance from my work and easy walk or bike to school for my husband rather than a house in south Seattle that would have meant a commute via car or bus in bad traffic with a main arterial's future uncertain.

Yeah, I moved away to go to college & won't go back. I liked it OK as a kid but often complained about nothing-to-do, nowhere-to-work, have-to-drive-everywhere. I can't get over the exec. homes up behind the elementary school, or back on Ash Swamp or wayyy down Grant Rd. They just seem so out of place to me!

I love the mill conversions though, they did a good job there.

For a NJ resident (and I assume most everyone else here). This is one of the most depressing threads I've found!

A sign by our 1 bdrm apartment "Houses start in the 530's!"

What a flippin deal!

My DH was contacted about a job on the other side of FL. It would entail MOVING : . Though it would be a pay increase, the homes are about 100 grand more over there. Here is something similar to what we have now. It would be insane. You can often see $425,000 for around an 1800 square foot home. With transportation costs being more, home costs being more, increased insurance (probably $2,000 more at least) and taxes (likely $4,000 more) it would completely "eat up" his raise : .

So it's a joke LOL. FL it still too expensive for anyone who works here pretty much. We just lucked out to buy a home before the big boom.

Our 124,000 home now would sell for 307,000....irony being when we bought our home my mom's home would have sold for $450,000.....now her home might get $250,000. She is from Michigan, and the property values have plummited over there. She has a HUGE house as well! Now she doesn't want to move because the values are so low...but each year it's $7,000 in taxes and likely $5,000 for heating costs. :

I just looked up what a similar condo/townhouse would be in my neighborhood and the prices ranged from $750,000 to $850,000! : Urghghh......I don't know why I do this to myself, it's too depressing.

I remember a few years ago when they were building a bunch of new houses nearby there was a sign that said "starting at $850,000" and I thought sarcastically "What a deal! Ha ha.". Well, now those houses are selling for 1.2 million or something. :

We had a similar sign in the nicer part of our neighborhood a couple of years ago. Except it said "Starting in the low $950,000s!" Whoo hoo, what a deal.:

The rowhomes next to us were "starting from the 500,000s" - then the next week it was "starting from the 700,000s" then the next week "starting from the 800000s". When they finally opened a showroom we stopped in to check it out and the 2 bed + den unit we liked was $849,000. Some days I despair of ever owning in this area...

I don't normally go in for condos, but that one is really nice! Just goes to show that a condo can actually be something with character and history to it.
