I don't think it's a faux pas for you to carry a boy in a girly sling. I wouldn't expect DH to wear a girly sling to carry my DD bc she's a girl! (But honestly, it's not the same thing. Girls can wear boy things a lot easier than boys can wear girl things.) I say go for it!
As far as comments go, people are going to mistake your child for the opposite sex no matter what you do. I can have DD in a pink dress and I still get, "What a cute little boy!" It happens no matter what I put her in, so I have given up caring!
