stafl- I have the same 1950ish Singer!! It was my Mamaw's ans my dad had it in his basement and he handed it down to me!

AND my DH bought me a Singer just about 3 months ago.
We got it at Sears ( one of the ones "designed for Sears exlusively) We paid $229 for it=)

It sews everything!!!! I don't dislike it yet but I am sure as I get more "experienced" that will change :
Tis good though!

Dislikes - I got rather spoiled with my all metal, feels like more than just a toy Singer

Likes - Workhorse.. will sew through ANYTHING...
Dislikes - no other stitches besides straight and zig zag, noisy beast

Likes - Easy to thread once you learn it initially
Dislikes - tensions difficult to get perfect, very noisy, a bit cranky with thick fabrics

Likes, everything lol But I am just learning to sew although I've had the machine for a few years lol
Dislikes...does not have a buttonholer


Type of Machine 1940's(?) Singer(the first year they made the portable electric)
Paid: $0..inherited from a relative of my grandfather's wife lol
Likes...sews VERY straight, great for quilting
Dislikes..it's very heavy to move around even in the case.


Type of Machine...Ellna serger(don't remember the model # off hand)
Paid: 400.00(also clearanced floor display )
Likes, it's a dream, sergers through everything, it was made for serging denim layers. Super easy to thread too.
Dislikes, it's hard to turn the fabric when serging, takes some getting used to
