What are you ordering for the coming homeschooling year?

I'm working on my order from the Rainbow Resource catalog for ds1 and dd for next year and I'm curious to see what everyone else is getting for next year. I'll post mine when I'm done.

Other than our curriculum, which I already purchased, I am getting:
*cuisinaire rods
*pattern blocks (and the picture cards)
*Rosetta Stone Spanish
*bean bags for tossing/throwing/catching
I think that's all (other than constantly buying more books to read ). The math in Enki uses the cuisinaire rods, so that is why I'm buying those. I love pattern blocks, and know my oldest would love the picture puzzles that you can get with them, and as a family we are going to do the Rosetta Stone. The bean bags are just for some fun throwing/catching/aiming games.

As far as I know, we'll be ordering Teaching Textbooks Algebra II for my eldest, and that's it. She may opt to do a free on-line music harmony course (MIT open courseware has one).

We're unschoolers and my kids are not overly curriculum-oriented. My middle kids will continue in Singapore Primary Math and Algebra I. My middle daughter has a college-level biology textbook that she wants to read, and I think I'll order a similar psychology text as the kids really seem to enjoy browsing and reading their way through well-written, pictorially luscious texts like this.

But we may purchase more, it's hard to say. My kids don't plan their learning out months in advance the way a parent might, because their interests grow and evolve and move in new directions as they learn and grow.

Well I have ordered my stuff already but here is what I got for next year.

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and State Capitols Wrap-ups
Mind Benders from Critical Thinking Co.
Spelling Power student test booklet (Because I like the layout)
Trail Guide to Us Geography
The Violin Book (Book 1 through 4 plus CDs)
A bunch of Dover coloring books (I have a slight addiction problem )
MUS Gamma and Japanese Abacus

I know there is more but I can't think of them right off hand.

Nothing right now, we are in a serious cash crunch :

However I do have some stuff I want to get when I can!

-World history timeline book from Hold That Thought

-Several Horrible History books

-The other books from the STory of Science series by Joy Hakim

-More art supplies

-A simple workbook for practising Italian

-Some science workbooks from Singapore

I am having real trouble here, I hate not being able to buy what I want NOW!

We'll get base ten blocks. We're using Math U See and Singapore math for kindergarden and 2nd grade.
For my 2nd grader,
We'll use Spelling workout workbooks, Story starters, Singapore math, Triominos and other games, scrabble, Singapore science, Singapore Grammar and A story of the World history.

For my kindergardener, we're using Singapore kindergarden math, Math U See, pattern blocks, Wooden multicolored Tangram shapes, Bob books and Phonics workbooks.

We'll get as many art supplies as we can afford, acrylics, water colors, water color paper, glue, construction paper, scissors, crayons, etc.

I'll keep looking at what everyone else is going to get.

MyLittleWonders,

What curriculum did you buy?

We're experiencing a "cash crunch" too. Luckily, I was able to sell a Merry Maids gift certificate that I won to raise $600 for our homeschooling stuff for the coming year. I'd decided that the money I got for the GC would go to that.

Well, I'm almost sure that we'll be HSing next yr. If that's the case we're getting:

DS-1st grade: MFW 1st grade curriculum

DS-Preschool: WinterPromise Preschool curriculum

DSS-7th Grade will be going to ps for sure b/c his mother would throw a FIT if I HS him.

We do lessons year-round, taking breaks whenever we feel inclined. We're currently finishing up a few things right now, but will be starting new programs in a month or so.

Big program for everyone (DS7, DS6, DD5, DD3)
-Winter Promise Animals and Their Worlds (combined program, PreK-1 and 2nd grade+) We'll be using this in a secular manner

DS7 will continue with what he's been doing:
-Explode the Code workbooks for Phonics (he just started Book 4)
-Miquon Math (he's halfway through the red book). After he finishes this book, he'll be doing a School Zone Time, Money and Fractions book & CD before starting with the next miquon book.

DS6 and DD5:
-Explode the Code workbooks for phonics (they'll start with Book 1 once they finish My Father's World K)
-??? for math. I don't think Miquon will be a good fit for DS6, so I'm considering Singapore or Math-U-See.

DD3: will sit and listen to books, color occasionally, etc. I do have a few School Zone Preschool workbooks, but I don't think she's ready for these yet.

We also do a lot of other things that we don't need to buy books for. During circle time each day:
-we sing a songs
-we read literature and history selections from What Your X-grader Should Know
-the kids practice public speaking (recite a poem/verse, or just practice getting up and saying their name and age clearly)
-We do calendar activities (today is ____? that means tomorrow is ____? Can you find today on your calendar?)
-We sometimes do a math problem of the day, or ask the kids to each make a different animal with pattern blocks.

I'll wait until all of the 'back to school' sales to stock up on art supplies. I tend to overbuy, which isn't a bad thing, considering how quickly those supplies are used up at our house.

I'm trying to buy all of the children's Japanese books I can get my hands on.
I'm also looking for a real good microscope we can take out in the field.
I'll be buying a scroll saw and a better jigsaw since my 9 year old wants to really get into woodworking.
Lots of artsy stuff (art pencils, paints, pastels, brushes, canvasses, etc.)

If I find something I think my boys will be interested in, I'll get it. But for the most part we will just keep doing what we've been doing.
I spend maybe a total of $100.00 a year (will be going over if I can find a good microscope) for supplies.

Teaching Textbooks Algebra II
I just heard of this program this summer. Would you happen to have a link for it? WE are currently using Saxon and don't know if we should switch or not? This fall we will mostly use Abeka books for the oldest and I don't know yet for the youngest.

I'm not planning on getting anything! I was going to go into a big spending spree but I know we can do well with what we have. Now I will be hitting all the back to school sales in the stores and loading up on art/craft supplies! I can't wait for that

I want to look at the Noeo Biology I curriculum and buy some individual books from the list instead. We had Noeo Chemistry I and while I loved the individual books, I did not like the organization and it did not work for my son. First, it instructed us to read about 2 pages every other day...we basically did not find the timeline or sequence to be useful. And as unschoolers, my son did not enjoy the structure (despite asking me to do it for several days). It just worked out that he enjoyed having the books read as read-alouds rather than following the curriculum. So, I think I'm going to buy him some of the Biology books for read-alouds. He likes cells and I'm thinking he would really enjoy going down that path.

I also need to buy some X-rays, as I got him all excited by telling him I saw them on a school supply website. I hope they are not too expensive. I also want to buy owl pellets as he has shown a lot of interest in that idea.

I can't think of anything else right now.

Ah...scrolling back up to see your ideas...I would like to order some pre-made slides. I have a perfectly good albeit clunky microscope from my childhood out in the garage somewhere. I want to buy him a microscope but I hate to buy one unless it's a really good one. Dh has his heart set on some kind of microscope that can be plugged into the computer. Anyway, if I can find my microscope in the garage, I think it would be a good starter one, since I have young kids. I want to buy some interesting slides; they would like that!

I am also really hoping that we can get a telescope for Christmas. We're moving to a new house that's out in the country. We will finally be a setting without light pollution; we would all love a telescope if we can afford it this year.

Well my oldest is 4.5 so we aren't using TOO much
Our main curriculum we are using is Sonlight. It is a literature based program. We bought the Pre-K Core and are using it for 2 yrs so we are set for that.
We have already gotten our Right Start Math for this yr. Amelie loves it!!
We have BOB books for reading and that is going really well.
Next month we are purchasing Le Francais Facile to teach French.
We have Sign Language activities.
I would really like to get a religion activity book for the girls to have some fun with.
I would also like to get some more Art supplies because my girls LOVE Art!
We have a tadpole habitat right now that we are keeping an eye on.
I think that is it for this yr.

Teaching Textbooks

They have good demos and information on their site. The Sonlight site also has a review/description; they think very highly of the program.

Where TT really excels is in presentation. It's enjoyable to use. My normally-mathematically-unmotivated dd has done almost half of Algebra I in the past 5 weeks, skipping most of the stuff that she doesn't need. My ds started about two weeks ago and is moving slowly but steadily, with good mastery, through material that's challenging to him. So far it's a good match in very different ways for my two kids.
