I'm having a really hard time picturing how the strands wind around the head.

You take three pieces of yarn the same length as the yarn you cut for the wig- if your wig is 12" long, then you cut the yarn and the strands 24" and sew/fold down the middle of this. Some doll makers like to braid the strand, but I find that twisting it works just as well. Once you have the wig yarn sewn into place on the head, down the center part, you arrange the hair over the head, then starting with the center fold of the strand, you pin this at the center front of the wig part, at the forehead. Then with either side of the yarn strand, you pull it back over the wig yarn to the back of the head- tying off at the nape of the neck in a square knot and pin. Check the sides of the head where the ears would be and pin the strand at both sides here. The strand should form a headband over the wig, holding the yarn hair down. Adjust the yarn hair under this strand until you have covered the back of the head (scalp) and arrange it to suit the head shape. Then using a double threaded doll makers needle or large embroidery needle, sew the strand down to the head through the wig yarn to hold everything in place. I go around the head on the strand, at least three times and then I go over the whloe head area, covered by the wig yarn and tack the yarn down to the scalp, at random spots for extra coverage. You don't want the scalp to peek through a whole lot. The yarn wig should be held taut to the head, by the strand. Without this strand, your wig would just flop all around and cover the face, or expose the scalp, during play, givng the effect of baldness with a bad toupee! This strands hold the wig down, just like a headband would.

PS- Don't forget to remove the pins, when you are finished sewing!
