If I use these directions http://mayna.livejournal.com/198548.html do I have to use a cover? If I do is there any way it could be avoided??

Yes, you need a cover, because there's no waterproofing. The pee will soak through the diaper and onto whatever the child is sitting on (their clothes, the carpet, the bed, your lap...) if you don't.

On the other hand, I've sometimes gone without a cover on the babe if I wanted to know ASAP if he was wet. He can't wear clothes in that case, though.

If you made the outermost layer from something waterproof instead of from flannel, you would have an AIO...

The problem with combining a fitted with a cover is that it doesn't dry very quickly...if you want something like an AIO, you might be better off using either these directions:http://www.geocities.com/mytafadhali/fleeceaioshell.htm
for a fleece AIO with a snap-in soaker, or this pattern and directions:http://diapersewing.wordpress.com/20...iaper-pattern/
although I wouldn't use wool for an AIO, which is one of the fabrics she suggests.
HTH!
