Fleece as liner???

Hi! I'm very new to sewing and CDing!

So here's my question... I have a pair of fleece pants (kind of like sweats) my older ds grew out of, can I sew them into liners/doublers? My younger ds is a super soaker and I always end up changing him in the middle of the night. I was thinking of adding another layer to his prefold. Is the fleece ok against his skin? or do I have to cover it with cotton or is the oposite better add a layer in between? I have no idea what I'm doing so any advice is welcome!

Thanks.

What is the fleece made out of? Is it cotton? If so, yes, it would make a good doubler. I have made diapers out of old cotton sweatpants and sweatshirts.

Now if it's 100% polyester, it won't actually absorb anything. The urine will pass right through it, and it probably won't make much of a difference. It would probably keep baby's skin dry, but won't do much for leakage.

If it's one of those things that's 50%cotton and 50% polyester, then you would pretty much have to test it. I've had sweats that were half and half like that, and they worked fine for me. Just cut a few up into rounded rectangular doublers and try them out. It can't hurt, you just have to kind of jump in there and experiment.

I pulled out the pants and they are 100% Poly. My ds is a toddler so he pees by the gal. Would it be a good idea to use the fleece as a top layer of a liner with cotton underneath?

Thanks.

If they are 100% poly, then they won't actually absorb anything. The only thing they will probably do is feel dry against his skin, which is good, if that's what you're aiming for, but it won't do anything for leaks.

If what you're looking for is extra absorbancy, then you may be better off getting some terry towel, or even better, some microfiber towels and adding the extra layers inside of your diaper.

Or, if you want to, you can get some terry towels or microfiber towels (microfiber is trimmer), and put a few layers together, and put your polyester fleece layer on top of them (so that it's next to his skin), and sew (zigzag)them together, and have a doubler to lay inside of his diaper at night that will absorb AND feel dry.

I'd also say, test the poly first to see if it feels try when it's wet, though. Most polyester fleece does, but it never hurts just to test to make sure.

OH, ok, : it's late, and i'm reading cross eyed and skipping stuff, and now I'm reading, that's what you were asking if you should do in your previous post. Sorry for being so redundant and restating your idea as my own. :

oh, ok, I just clicked into the diaper forum and stumbled across your dilemma.

It sounds like you have a heavy night wetter, in which case I strongly suggest microtowels because they absorb a lot. I say, wash your fleece polyester in some dawn soap and rinse a few times. Then cut into rounded rectangles about the size to make a doubler, and put about 4 layers of microfiber towels (you don't need to strip them first) with a layer of polyester fleece on the top and sew them together, (zigzag or serge) and you have yourself some doublers.

You can find microfiber towels in the automotive section at somewhere like walmart or advance auto parts, where the car washing stuff is.

Also, do you have any wool covers?

I welcome the repetition! I need it. Believe me!

I don't have wool covers but I've been reading that they are more breathable. I'll look into getting some.

And the doublers sound simple enough, even for me. Great!

Thanks.

No prob!

Wool is not only breathable, but it is very waterproof, I use it full time, but many folks use it overnight because it's MUUUUUCH more waterproof than fleece covers and find that it is the only kind of cover that keeps nighttime leaks from happening, especially when they are felted and well lanolized.

Hope you find something that works.

So I went to the Walmart today... that place is just wierd. I picked up some microfiber towels (and some super cheap tea tree oil of all things!) and tomorrow I'm going to attempt to make some doublers! I'm really excited!
Thanks for all your help!
