What does the box say? Have you consulted your doc/pharmacist?

I'm a pharmacist and I would feel comfortable using it. We use it in our NICU babies with severe GERD, and the following blurb from Lactmed makes me feel OK about it:

Summary of Use during Lactation:
Limited information indicates that maternal omeprazole doses of 20 mg daily produce low levels in milk and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants.

Really? I thought they used prevacid.

My baby was on Prilosec for a bit. I'd take it and not worry.

I'm at work in my hospital pharmacy, and we use either one. I'm not sure why we would select one over another, they're pretty much the same.

Yeah, we tried it when Evan was little for his GERD. We've also used Prevacid, Axid, and Zantac so any of those are safe for you.

thanx mamas!

Thank you ladies. I called my pharm at 1st and he said it probably was not safe since i was bfing. something about the possibility of transfering carcinagins (sp?) but then the ped called and said it was fine and that they do prescribe it as well for babies with GERD. I'm glad i can take it. Hopefully I'll start feeling better soon.

My ob preferred protonix while I was preg ( I didn't ask why) but I really don't think prilosec would hurt while breastfeeding, my dd has been on prevacid, now prilosec, etc etc.. since she was 8 weeks old.

That pharmacist should brush up on their lactation medicine! At least get a copy of the Hale book! Tsk!
