nurse comment after c/s

Can you believe this one? DH's cousin just got the usual interventions that cascaded into a c-section. The next morning, she was complaining about the pain .... and the nurse said ....

"Are you going to breast feed? I can give you something to make you feel better, but only if you aren't going to breastfeed."

Can you believe that? Talk about being unsupportive!! Learning to breastfeed while recoving is hard enough without somebody implying you will have even more pain! I was so horrified. Of course, she didn't even try to breast feed. So SAD!!!!

Does it get any stronger than a morphine drip? I breastfed on that and I was pushing that button whenever I could the first day or so.

That nurse needs to take some classes on bfing (shouldn't all L and D nurses be trained in lactation issues?) They give you morphine in your spinal or epidural for one thing, and then they pushed percoset on me like crazy (I didn't need it, I think I finally took the motrin they gave me the last day) and I was bfing.

That is ridiculous, ignorant, and ridiiculously ignorant. Not to mention abysmally anti-BF. There are good drugs, safe for breastfeeding, for csec mamas. For my own csec 10yrs ago, the only caveat I was given is that if I was going to keep baby in bed w/me, all they would give me was extra strength tylenol every 4hrs (not 3, w/codeine, just a larger dose of regular tylenol). It was plenty--and well worth it for continuous rooming in and co-sleeping! I did really want my dose a bit before the 4 hrs was up for that first week, but it really wasn't a big deal. I went home at 2 days post surgery, and continued w/tylenol constantly for 1 week, a bit less for 2nd week and then nothing after that...and if I started to hurt during weeks 3&4, I took it as a sign to go lie down (not that I was doing much mind you, until about wk 5).

So wrong...so sad to know that that attitude is out there.

Wow! My nurses (the L&D nurses are all LCs as well at my hospital) were all "better a sleepy breastfed baby with a pain free mama who can relax and let the milk flow then a baby on formula when there's no good reason for it". I had percocet and motrin and tons of breastfeeding support. DD1 roomed in and we started nursing in the recovery room.

I can't believe a nurse would say something like that to a patient...patients have the right to pain control and even if that nurse couldn't think of a safe med off the top of their head they should have offered to find something and gone to consult with someone a bit more informed.

I know I'm judging something that was said/happened when I wasn't there and I shouldn't do that but all I can think is WHAT A B!TCH.

When I was in the hospital the nurse said, "Well I could give you something for the pain, but only if you weren't breastfeeding anymore." And that was not the only time she tried to discourage me from breastfeeding, either. AND she gave my baby formula even after both my husband and I told her not to. She is just a bad person and should definitely NOT be an L&D nurse.

I had an evil nurse too that fed the "atleast you have a healthy baby" line to me. But even she gave me pain medication when I was breastfeeding.

How horrible. I had the morphine in my spinal like everyone else, & some IV pain med afterwards (don't recall what), and was regularly offered Vicodin on top of my ibuprofen. There's certainly no call to refuse a breastfeeding mama pain meds if she needs them.
