Knocking on someone's door and running away

So my son was knocking on people's doors and running away the other day. We found out about it and made certain he knows it's not OK. But that got me thinking: Are there non-racist terms for that activity? I know two terms for doing that. Both of them contain horrible racial slurs. I don't understand why that is somehow linked with racism but I know I can't very well use those terms when talking about it "in public".

my kids call it ding dong ditch. ds2 did it one time, and learned well it was not a fun activity when he was caught by that neighbors dad. but the bad thing is i was secretly laughing inside that he did it. those neighbors were awful and always causing us trouble.

Yeah, I think that is funny and fairly harmless, although I am sure I will have to make a big deal and act really upset when my kids inevitably participate in "knock and run" (not many people around here have doorbells -- frankly, there aren't very many people around here, thus not many doors, either.

Don't be too hard on him, Sir...it's kind of funny. At least he didn't throw eggs or toilet paper trees. What a mess!

Woe! Where the heck do you live! ? How sad!!!!

It's simply known as ding dong ditch here, although there are nearly no children out around my area unsupervised (which I find sad, reallly).

I really do not want to know where you are from, or what you folks call it. I am going to unsub right now so I can be spared the crud.

i really apoligize if what we called it as children is wrong, but we were children and no one told us differently.

We called it ding dong ditch. It wasn't until I was older i heard the offensive version.

i've heard ding dong ditch, and when we were little our next door neighbors called it by a different name (the aforementioned racist slur).
could someone please explain what it means? I had no idea honestly.

Huh, I never heard "ding dong ditch" until I was older; it was always the racial slur when I was a kid. Yeesh.

I've never heard of your version, but the racial slur I've heard of is the 'n word' knocking. Not sure where it even came from, but I'm GLAD I never knew that version when I was little and when I did hear it I was old enough to know it was wrong.
