losing weight

I really would not consider this a problem, but I couldn't post this anywhere else and I don't have much time. My little man is not nursing as much as he used to and now I am losing weight like mad. He is one so that is why he is not nursing as much anymore. I am almost at my college weight which I thought I would never get back to. I am now below my goal weight when I was doing body for life and working out like crazy. Yes, I am eating better, but wouldn't think I would be losing this much weight with the little I am doing. I weighed 158 while pregnant with Justice and 128 before I got pregnant and I am now 119.5. Is this common and does the weight come back on once you have stopped nursing? I plan to nurse him until he is two, or weans himself. The weight loss is just one more reason to keep going, but depressing because I am afraid it will come back on once he stops. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Shelby

Sounds a little abnormal. I would say see your doc and get your thyroid tested.

Are you otherwise healthy? Does your son eat a lot of solids, take a bottle or pacifier?

I weight less now that I did before I got pregnant the first and second times (2001 & 2004). After my 2nd baby, I used the sling all the time and stopped eating dairy. I think even if I hadn't gone off dairy, w/ BF & using the sling all the time, I was working off the weight.

If you continue to loose weight each week, you might want to see your doctor/midwife. If you've just kind of leveled off, maybe it's related to BF and carrying around a baby a lot.

Congrats on your babe!

Yet another plug for breastfeeding!

I started my first pregnancy at a healthy weight (within the range of "normal" for my height), gained 50 pounds (thanks in part to pre-eclampsia), but then in the course of breastfeeding managed to lose 60 pounds! I did nothing except eat a "normal" breastfeeding diet (avoiding alcohol, increasing fluids a bit, grabbing an extra serving of veggies when I thought about it, etc). And I was still producing milk like a champion dairy cow!

Here's a few things to consider when wondering about your sudden weight loss: I've heard some women say that their bodies cling on to a few baby pounds while nursing that they suddenly lose when they wean. It may be their body's way of ensuring it has enough fat stores to support the baby. So if your baby (you said a year old?) is nursing less, your body may be dumping those fat stores now. Beware of this if you think it's effecting your milk supply.

If you think that it's not related to breastfeeding, then consider other sources of sudden weight loss: illness (a long-running minor virus maybe?), stress, depression, hypoglycemia, anemia, thyroid issues... A quick trip to the dr will answer those questions, and if your baby is a year old, it's probably time for your yearly appointment anyway.

Otherwise, just be sure to drink enough water, take your prenatals, and grab an apple or carrot stick once in a while to ensure you're getting enough nutrition.

We should all be so lucky
