Can a CPM administer antibiotics for GBS+?

I'm hoping to have a homebirth with baby #4 due February 2008. Our second child contracted GBS during delivery and developed sepsis, meningitis, etc. I therefore had antibiotics with baby #3 and he was fine. Most likely we'll opt for antibiotics again, as the risk of baby being infected is much higher once we had one infected.

My question is, can a CPM administer antibiotics during a home birth? There are no CNMs who do homebirths in Minnesota, so we may have to opt for a birth center if we can't get abx at home.

I think it depends on your state. Here in FL, yes.

Also, some MWs have MD contacts that can write prescriptions. Worth calling some MWs to discuss.

Yes, if you can get an rx for it from your pcp or pedi she should be able to administer it in labor. Like PP said talk to some CPM's in your area. Good luck with your pregnancy and birth! Paige

something to complain about to the state if it doesn't allow for LMs/CPMs to administer IV ABX,
the amount of instruction needed for this ability is fairly limited in Alaska they do a 1 day class in IV and ABX -- I think that New Mexico has a short IV certification program as well-
just thought that I would mention this incase you live somewhere that doesn't allow administration -- a little activism doesn't hurt anyone

Some states need a lot of help from the consumers in this area, to change the laws!
