Easy Snack Ideas

A couple people have requested this list that I'd made up, and I figure it can be useful to many. I actually will be putting this on my fridge because when my brain is mush from getting no sleep it is helpful to have something to look at. Feel free to add your own ideas please- eating well while nursing and caring for an infant REALLY helps your mentality.

Easy Snack Ideas
Granola bars
Whole-wheat toast with p.b. and/or jam
Bagel
Cheese, crackers and apple slices
Apple or banana slices with nut butter
Nuts
Grilled cheese sandwich or quesadilla
Sliced Ham rolled with cream cheese
Celery with cream cheese or peanut butter
Pretzels and nut butter or cream cheese
Hard-boiled eggs
Tuna or chicken salad and crackers
Pasta salad
Quick breads or muffins
Chicken Breast
Hummus or other bean dips
Sliced veggies with dip
Fruit
Dried fruit and nut mix, trail mix
Cheese
Chips & salsa- can also mix the salsa w/cottage cheese for more protein & calcium
Yogurt
Clif bars or similar (maybe try a homemade energy bar- many recipes online)
Pudding
Cereal/Granola with milk

More Ideas:
If you're feeling crummy try keeping a food diary for a few days with the food you eat and drink, and the time eaten. This can make you aware of what you're eating, whether you're getting a variety of foods, and can help you eat better and not skip meals or snacks.

Snacks that include protein or fiber will give you longer lasting energy than sugary snacks.

When you make a snack, make extras for later.
Prepare items ahead of time such as cut veggies, sliced cheese, tuna or chicken salads

If you need more calories add oil or butter to most dishes. Avacado is also a healthy high calorie food.

Make big batches of smoothies (add protein powder if needed) then pour them into individual plastic bottles. Freeze, then take one or two out in the evening for the next day- easy to drink while nursing.

Make a pureed soup that can be drunk out of a mug, like cream-of tomato or spinach, or similar.

Try to eat before you're famished, it will keep your blood sugar even, which helps your immune system and makes life easier to deal with in general.
Keep snacks in your diaper bag, by your bed, by your nursing chair, in your car……

Drink plenty of water- keep a water bottle with you- flavor with lemon, lime, tea bags, or electrolyte mix if plain water is too boring.

Great list - thank you Lissybug!

Wanted to add another easy snack idea:

Banana rollups.

Take a whole wheat tortilla, spread with peanut butter or Nutella (my fave), then lay a peeled banana in centre. Roll it in, then slice into rounds. Voila! Easy, fast, healthy and filling.

cottage cheese
yogurt with nuts or honey or fruit or granola or all of the above
apple with cheese or as mentioned above peanut butter

Great idea, especially for our newly nursing mommas!

What a great list, thanks lissybug!

I will be making up batches of egg salad to take out quickly and also making lots of plain basmati rice to eat hot or cold

I need a thread like this!

I have been trying to come up with protein snacks for myself and my 3.5 yr old. Most of our quick snack have been starchy and carby and leaving me feeling crappy. So, these are some things that we have been doing...

Chicken dippers: cold cooked chicken breast that we slice and dip in ranch or french onion dip.

cheese stick roll ups: whole wheat tortillas with string cheese rolled in the middle.

edamame pods

bananas dipped in sunflower seeds

spinach eggs: I buy frozen chopped spinach and add it to my scrambled eggs. Sometimes I eat it in a tortilla with some cotija cheese...yum!

celery and peanut butter

I find that I am inspired to eat better when things are prepped: lettuce chopped, veggies sliced. meat cooked, eggs boiled, cheese grated, etc.

great thread! keep your ideas coming!

soybeansmam- some of your snacks sound really good! Yesterday I read an idea to chop up spinach or kale and add it to egg salad, or tofu salad if that's more your style.

You can do this with apple also, and add granola to either. The possibilities are endless! I love roll-ups.

Heres my new thing that I am excited about...

I buy a huge bag of frozen foster farms chicken breast from costco and cook half of it. Then I make chicken salad out of half and bbq chicken for sandwiches out of the other half. All ready to go! I have been eating the chicken salad with whole wheat crackers or wrapped in a lettuce leaf. YUM...

One more idea to add...

This is fun for me and i think that it is also how my nesting has manifested itself.

Smoothie packs:
In ziploc freezer bags you prep chopped fruit & yogurt. Then when they are frozen you plop them in the blender with some soy milk, or milk of your choice and blend!! no need for ice. Yummy. This morning I had a pluot, peach banana with strawberry yogurt and added soy milk. It was very good!
