9mo wants more milk than there is...

DS is 9.5 months old. He hardly eats at all... we work on it multiple times each day but it just isn't going so well. DP is breastfeeding him, and works full time so is pumping about 4 times each day. Now it seems that for the past few weeks, he just isn't getting enough milk, and DP's pumpings have produced less than they used to. We're not sure if it is because DS is just demanding more milk, and so he is drinking it all before she pumps, or if there just plain isn't enough milk for him.
DP can't pump anymore than she is, and we're worried that DS just plain isn't getting enough milk. She is taking herbs, eating oatmeal, drinking Mother's Milk Tea and so on, to try to increase her supply, but it just doesn't seem to be making a whole lot of difference. So we're beginning to look into the organic soy formulas just to supplement when DS is still hungry and there isn't any milk available-- looks like there is the Earth's Best one and the Baby's Only one... does anyone have any experience with either of these? Good? Bad?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The pumping should be supply and demand so Id have her pump more often. Is he still gaining weight well? Could you use an infant scale to gauge how much he is getting?

Sorry no experience with any of those formulas.

Thx-- but no way for DP to pump more. Work is VERY demanding and long hours so the 4 pump breaks is really pushing it. Am also going to post this in Life With a Babe I think-- not sure if breastfeeding challenges is the place to post a ? about formula??? Thanks so much!

Might there be a way to give a different pump a try? What kind does she have now? That is the only thing I can think of beyond pumping more, she may just not be responding as well to it anymore? Is she able to relax, look at a picture of your ds, have something that smells like him?

I'm sorry I don't have any advice on formula. I would do some reading about soy before you decide on it.

Pumps are never as efficient as a baby at getting the milk out. Many women have trouble keeping up with baby's demand. Could she try adding an extra pumping session before she leaves for work? Maybe pumping on one side while baby nurses on the other?

Another thought might be to try to step up the nursing while mom is home, and make do while she is away with the amount she is able to pump and solids.

Here's a FAQ on pumping and supply.
