Did you get the birthing experience that was described on your Birth Plan? - Page 2

My birth plan was followed both times but I've never made a rigid one anyway as I think it's important to be prepared for the unexpected. I think all I've had on it either time is stuff like having entonox for pain relief, decision about cutting the cord, Vitamin K injection, that sort of stuff.

Both times I've needed to be induced. I wasn't bothered about being monitoring.

To be honest I think I'd go along with anything if it meant the safe delivery of a baby.

In the hospital I had the absolute opposite experience, except that I did end up with the baby alive. That was the only thing that I got out of it that I wanted. That's a pretty big thing, but the babies and I were exposed to drug and injury that we didn't want or need.

I'll always stay home now.

No, but the important part was that dh and I had discussed and thought through everything ahead of time. That was probably most important that we went into the birth prepared.

one thing i really liked about our birth pan was the process of creating it

it got us to look at and talk about interventions, and medications and so on ... which was a great education when some thing did becaome medically necessary............

as we had done our research and looked at reasons for use, and pros and cons.... when the interventions were needed. 1. we agreed they were needed, we were not blindly following (thus maybe being lied to) and 2. we had a good idea what the intervent could offer us and what risks we were taking... thus i felt educated to make that choice based on the situation, my health, the baby health and the pros and cons.....and NONE of that was done in the rush or heat of the moment.

Yes I plaaned to avoid them, and had to have them, but the work i did on the plan made me a better consumer when the time came........I am glad i had done my home work, even on things i never expected to need or want... rather than just saying "NO INTERVENTUIONS" and leaving it at that........

That is why our BP is specific about emergecy CS and NICU stays for the baby -- things that we never expect to need. so if we DO we are not flying by the seat of our pants, or at the mercy of what we get told at the time.... we are educated as well as we can be before hand.

this is why i advise my freinds who are HB to still do a birth plan, espcially first time moms.

Just a thought

My birth plan was taken seriously both times - however, not everything was accommodated, but they were great about looking over the plan upfront and telling me what they could and could not do and we could discuss it.

I loved "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Goer - it helped tremendously to understand the research behind everything, so I could feel comfortable knowing what I was willing to give in on and what to fight for. When making a decision, I didn't need to rely on the doctors giving me all hte pros and cons in the moment, I already knew them so I could make the best decision, or happily go along with what the doctors were recommending, feeling confident it was the right thing to do given the circumstances.

Lol, no. But then labor wasn't what I expected either. I wanted a drug free, limited monitoring delivery. But... after laboring for 3 days straight, with contractions only 2 min apart and extremely strong, I was exhausted!!! and only 3 cm dialated. So in order to hurry things along they broke my water, and I finally allowed them to give me an epi. I was so tired and all I wanted was to finally sleep, as I knew I needed energy to push. Unfortanetly the epidural was splotchy so I couldn't sleep anyways, but at least it wasn't so bad and I could rest a bit. They said they had to do internal monitoring because of the position of dd. In the end I was glad they did as the cord was wrapped around her neck. No episo, like I asked, instead I recieved a 3rd degree tear. But I did recieve a beautiful healthy baby, so it was all worth it in the end.

I thought this question looked familiar. I already answered it on another continent. Small world indeed....
