Duplicate uterus??

Hi there,

I had an ultrasound a couple weeks ago (at 8wks pregnant). During the US the tech discovered I have a duplicated uterus. She called in the radiologist dr, who confirmed and checked to see if I had 2 kidneys (which I do), 1 cervix (which I do)...

At the time, the dr made it seem like it was common and no big deal. I wish I had gotten them to draw a picture of what they saw, for I have no idea if they could tell which type of duplicate uterus it is - bicornate, unicornate, septate etc. The report from the US clinic to my ND only says "Duplicated uterus with the pregnancy on the left" - (which is the same side as my previous pregnancy) The tech went back to my first US in my previous pregnancy and could see, in retrospect that there was a duplicate uterus, though it wasn't pickd up at that time, as I was further along in that pregnancy.

Doing a bit more research on the web, I've freaked myself out about what this could mean for my pregnancy... ie increased risk of fetal demise, less room for fetus, pre term delivery etc... Luckily I seem not have any problem getting pregnant, which seemed to be one of the potential problems of uterine anomalies

This is my 2nd pregnancy, my 1st ended in a stillbirth at 28 wks in late Sept; obviously, I am wondering if my uterus could have contributed to the stillbirth of our son (all blood tests and autopsy couldn't determine a cause of death)... and wondering what this could mean for my current pregnancy.

I am trying to schedule an appt w/ a perinatologist, but that is not for awhile, ad my next appt w/ my ND is not for a few more weeks as well.

Any thoughts, adivce, positive stories would be greatly appreciated

i work in a high risk L&D. is it biconuate or septate uterus? they just watch you a little closer for Preterm labor.but many positive outcomes. i also have a friend who has a of thebicornuate uterus but also has two cervicies. she had a previous stillbirth (was not linked to uterus shape) and then she gave birth 1 yr ago to twins one in each. the true hump in usually conceiving. good luck! i attached a pretty good graphic of some different uterine structure since you didnt get to see a drawing!

I don't know which kind of uterine anomaly I have, I don't think the U/S folks could determine for sure which kind.

I woud love to have a homebirth, and am worried this might make me high risk, or be stuck w/ having to have a C/S... Did your friend deliver vaginally or w/ C/S?

thanks for the positive birth story!

I have a friend with a didactic... I don't know the word. She has two of everything in her reproductive system, basically. She's had 3 healthy kids, but all born by c-s because she has a septum in her cervix (or something like that).

That group of reproductive issues are called Mullerian Abnormalities. There is a yahoo group, from which my friend has gotten a ton of info.

hth.

I believe it's also called bicorneated (either responsive or unresponsive) uterus...I have this and have had 5 kids successfully!
