There's another argument about giving birth in a hospital--there are nurses who think that hospitals are so disease ridden that newborns need vaccines just to spend any time there.

I am so upset by the thoughts of hospitals on this site (MDC). I am an RN in the NICU and I really hate to hear people say "Never leave your baby alone with hospital staff!" It really makes me feel like parents believe we are mosters who will try to kill their children as soon as they leave the room!

I am honestly shocked at some of the stories I hear (read) on the various boards. I just cannot imagine any nurse doing that to any parent. I guess I am a lucky person to work where I work and with the staff I work with. We do not give any shots without the consent of the parents.....we double check the signed consent before we give the shot. We do not circ without a consent signed....that too is double checked. If we don't trust a consent (ie: hard to read signature) we ask the parents directly and have them sign another consent in front of us.

I am sorry this happened to you.

Well, I don't think hospital staff are monsters, but tehy can get in a routine.

Plus, there is no reason for a healthy newborn to leave its parents' side anyways,

In my two very different hospital births, I found that 90% of the staff was absolutely wonderful.

Sadly, it's the 10% that isn't that ruins it for the other 90%.

Then again, that's true of ANY institution, be it education, government, or healthcare.

With ds2 we never let him out of our sight during the 48 hours in hospital. With ds1 we knew less, and let him go for some stretches, but they always followed our wishes (i.e. no formula, no pacifiers, etc.).
