My gift for my son's friend who turned 6 was the hit of yesterday's party. We got him a marble run. We found it at Target for about $15 (they a;so had a more expensive one for about $35).

My ds is going to be 5 very soon.

He loves:

Legos
Stamps and ink pads
Art supplies, especially those foam stickers and his scissors
Matchbox cars (collectable but inexpensive)
His flashlight and battery operated lantern
A foam pump rocket for outdoors http://www.amazon.com/Pump-Rocket-Set/dp/B0002D0F46
Dress up clothes
Books about robots, space, dinosaurs, pirates
Anything he can use to be a "spy" with. We got him a gadget that is a compass, a flashlight and a whistle at a local camping store for about $15. He calls it his "spy tool".
He loves Playmobil police and pirate toys
