We just wanted to share our happy news! The Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery has received its long-awaited temporary approval to operate from the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education, making it the first California-based midwifery school to receive offical status as a postsecondary program. We are based in San Diego, CA.
Temporary approval is issued by California until the state is able to conduct a site visit. We do not have a date for that as yet but anticipate that it will occur within the next year.
We will shortly re-enter the accreditation process with the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council and can then apply for approval to the Medical Board of California. With MBC approval and MEAC accreditation, our graduates can be licensed as midwives in California. The Nizhoni program should meet or exceed requirements for midwifery licensure in other states; we will certainly work with students in other states to assist them in meeting their state requirements.
Because of California regulations, we were not even allowed to advertise this program until the Bureau approval process was complete, so if the news of a California midwifery school comes as a surprise to you, there is an appropriate reason for that! Our website will be up soon, and we will provide information about how to access it as soon as it is available. This "gestation" has taken more than three years and we definitely have been feeling more than a little "post-term" but our baby has been born, and we are so very happy! Thank you for sharing in our excitement!
