Is it Normal??

Good Day to all..
First, thanks for taking the time to read my post. I have a five week old Son, Mitchell..he was born a bit over 10 lbs. I had him natrually, so he was so alert and latched on a few minutes after he was born. I mention his weight because of how often he eats. Of course, I am nursing him. I nursed my daughter, but she and I struggled. She weaned herself around 10 months old. Back to my Son (pardon jumping around.,,,still in that newborn sleep deprived state) Is it normal for him to eat so often? Someone said every two hours is normal, but when he is awake, he pretty much eats the whole time. He does not fall asleep at my breast usually...he comes off on his own when he is done, but it could be an HOUR! Then he wants to eat again half hour later. He is definatley eating,,,jaw moving up and down,,,strong, long tugs. He weighed 13 lbs nine ounces at his one month visit a week ago, so I am definatley making enough milk this time (as opposed to my daughter,,had very low milk suppily) But is it possible he is eating so much because my body is not keeping up with making enough Milk? Or is there such a thing as "quality milk" Is there something wrong with my milk that it is not keeping him full? Or do these big babies just eat more? Nursing my Son is so very important to me and I want to do right by him....I felt like such a failure, as a Mother, when I had so much trouble nursing my daughter. This is so important to me and I would appreciate any feedback anyone has to offer.

Sending Peace, Love and Light to All :-)

In short, yes, it is normal.

I find that the size of the baby doesn't matter much - some babies eat fast and some eat slow. Some only latch on to eat, others will stay after the meal and comfort nurse (less milk is flowing, they just want to suck). Breastmilk is processed by thier bodies very easily so the in and out is fast.

Babies grow so much in the first weeks and it is normal for them to eat all the time. I think an over 3 lb gain in 4 weeks is a pretty sure sign that you have enough milk. You can always track his wet and dirty diapers if you are concerned.

It sounds like you are doing a great job. The first weeks are harder, it will probably even out a bit around 8 weeks. Hang in there

Yeah! you are making alot of milk, that is awesome!!
you should be soo happy about that, my baby is a year and just like with you are your daughter, I have struggled this whole time to make enough for her, I am still so worried, she eats regular food now, so I know she is not starving, but oh how I wish I had your problem,
I hope that doesn't sound rude, I am just tring to make you feel better, because you sound like a really great abd caring mama!
he'll probley stop eating so much once he stops growing so much and once he starts eating solids, it sounds like he's just going to be a big healthy boy
blessings and positive thoughts to you

That sounds like his way. He should start to eat less often when his tummy gets bigger and can hold more. Right now he is still working on getting your supply to meet his needs. It wont take much longer I dont think. He is just a big eater right now.

My first DS was exactly like that! Thank goodness he was my first, and I was able to sit with him and allow him the "luxury" of nursing for such extended periods of time. He did gain a lot of weight- weighed 29 lbs by his one-year-old visit- but he slimmed down quite a bit by the time he was 2.

totally normal, my dd never nursed for an hour straight.....she would go 5-10 minutes, then nurse again in less than 20 minutes....all day and all night until after she had her 6 week growth spurt!

i had it put to me this way before and it's kinda cute so i will pass it on...

some people just really like the atmosphere at the restaurant!! :

hang in there, you are doing a great job, and your ds is gonna be a strong healthy boy

Everyone else has done such a great job of assuring you that it's normal - let me just say to your other question, there's no such thing as "bad" milk! Sometimes, babies are allergic to something in our diets, but he would be exhibiting signs of distress like vomiting or another reaction. I think that you'll notice a great deal of relief from his constant nursing soon - probably at the 6 week mark or perhaps at ~3 months. I know Benton liked to nurse often and tended to be a snacker instead of a meal kind of guy, no matter how much I encouraged him to space his nursing, it didn't work! They are so different, aren't they?

Many hugs and I hope you get some sleep soon!

Normal!

DS was 7.5 lbs and would eat for hours at a time, sometimes falling asleep, sometimes not. For a little bit there, I thought I'd never do anything besides nurse It changes, of course, and then it changes again, then again...

You're doing great!!
