Do 4.5 yr old children know how old they are? - Page 2

My 4.5 year old likes to tell people he's 10.

Yes, he knows how old he is, but thinks an older age sounds "cooler". My son is very large for his age, people often think he's around 6 years old, and he wont always tell them the correct age when they ask, so often I pipe in and tell them he's only 4.5 years old.

BTW, my son knows how old he is, his birthdate and that he'll be five in November. It's just a matter of if he feels like joking or being serious when he's asked.

I vote for developmentally delayed. My DD LOOKS 5 but is 3.5...but mentally is more like 2.5 (as far as communication, not other areas). Of course I know this and therefore don't expect her to "act her age" at all - and I know it confuses the heck out of some of the teachers she's had - like tumbling, music, etc. They expect her to act 3 EVEN AFTER I JUST TOLD THEM she's delayed LOL After much work she can finally answer the question "what's your name" but she has no clue what you mean when you ask "how old are you" unless she imitates something she heard in a video (um Elmo is three - maybe this kid got it from Elmo? LOL)

Anyway, I think the director of whatever program this is where you are working should probably let the mother know that her son might need to be evaluated by the school district for delays. She might not listen...but then again sometimes it's hard to tell what is normal if it's your oldest! All she might need is an objective stranger pointing it out...

good luck
peace,

Well, it is certainly within the realm of possibility that the mom would lie. I once had a co-worker who admitted to me that she had altered one of her children's birth certificate so that the child could start kindergarten a year early! And just because she (the mom) was eager to return to work!

In this case in sounds like the bottom line is that the child is not developmentally ready for the classes or the environment -- regardless of his actual age. Your boss should address this with the mother.
