Help! Biting...

I try to nurse my children as long as possible...generally till I am pregnant again (I don't during pregnancy due to hyperemesis graverium every other pregnancy). Lactation Amnorhea is the only form of "bc" we use (basically, we believe it's nature's way of child spacing).

My babe is just turned a year and just cut her 6th tooth. This week she bit me (the intentional kind with full forth on the front of her jaw, not the suckling too hard kind). I think it was her way of saying, "okay, I'm done." Both of my nipples have slices in them that became infected for several days (had to drain pus from the cuts). Now of course it hard like you know what...even hurts when any of my children hug me. Her suckling is getting stronger and it causes "scraping" of her teeth on my nipples as well...chapping my skin.

My second child did the same when she was a babe. She would actually take chunks of flesh off! Between 7mos and 9mos we fought it out...nurse, severe bites, 3 days formula, couple of days nursing, severe bites, 3 days formula. At 9mos I finally gave in. I was losing my milk supply (no wonder) and I was just worn out from fighting it. :

My longest nursing relationship with my children was 16mos. I so don't want to quit now. But I'm in pain, it's affecting my milk supply, and I don't know how to get her to quit biting or loosen her suction.

Advice??

wow....my baby is about 5 mos and has started biting down or well "gumming" down on my nipple. we still use a nipple shield cuz she is stubborn and i was never able to wean her off (although i still have hope). i was hoping that as she got older she might be able understand that it hurts mommy....but im guessing you tried that one already. would a nipple shield help in the healing process for you maybe? the new ones are so so think that it hasnt seemed to effect my supply at all and i have heard the same from others. i feel like it also acts as a buffer when she bites, i figure it would hurt way more if it wasnt there!

goodluck
