Tips for getting my certifying births?

Hi all,

I was trained by DONA back in December, but have sort of stalled out since then. (While I loved the training, it made me realize that I didn't want to start attending births til DS was older.) I'm so excited to start pursuing this work more actively, but I'm not quite sure where to start. I signed up with a local doula group who will list me on their site. I got one referral from a friend but she ended up choosing someone with more experience. So, how do I go about getting the experience?

I've heard attending births as a volunteer can be good. Not sure how to find opportunities like that though, and if that would meet DONA's requirements.

Any tips? I'm in the NYC area, btw, if anyone has local tips.

I had great luck by listing my services on www.bellywomen.net. It is a free service that you can list your services but it is for reduced rate or volunteer services.

The other successful referrals I had were from other local doulas who referred birthing mothers to me if they were looking for reduced rate services or if the other doula was too busy around their EDD.

Good luck!

Have you signed up for the metro doula group yahoo group? Emails come across all the time for volunteer doulas. Thats how I got most of my first free births. Good luck!
