My friend has a two week old baby. She just emailed to say she has mastitis. Gah. What to do about mastitis? She has wanted to nurse this baby so badly, I'd love to help her fix this ASAP.

See a doctor ASAP for medications.
And along with that, REST, nurse as much as possible, warm compresses before nursing, and ensure good fluid intake.
It's a tough row to hoe, but she's not alone!
I second what rootsnort wrote and wanted to add to have mom point the baby's chin at the lump where the mastitis is. Rest really is going to do alot as well! I hope that she is feeling better soon.
I've had mastitis a billion times, and the very best thing I've done is high-dose vitamin C. Minimum of 6000mg for me when I get mastitis, and it goes away.
