Purity Farms ghee (and other products) in Sacramento, CA area?

We'll be travelling to Orangevale next week. I'm late on asking this, because I totally didn't think about this until now. I just called Elliot's in Citrus Heights, where we get a lot of our food when we're there. They don't carry it!! (That's what the woman said, anyway, but she really didn't seem to understand what I was asking. So either they really don't carry it, or she's clueless.) Does Raily's carry it? Some other store? I'd really rather not be packing ghee in our checked baggage. We're already taking way too much!

Also, where would I find good eggs? And is there a better place to get grass-fed beef than Trader Joe's? And what about chicken? I think we got that at Trader Joe's last time, too. We don't eat dairy, so that's not an issue.

Any information would be much appreciated.

TIA

I live in Orangevale!!! We visited New Mexico last fall for the XPrize cup last fall. We're going back in Oct. We love it there!

I buy my eggs at the farmer's market at Sunrise Mall on Saturday mornings. It runs 8am to noon. There is someone in Orangevale down Hickory that occasionally sells eggs. It's kind of hit or miss and I don't know anything about how they feed their chickens. They roam around quite a bit.

I usually get my meat from Whole Foods. All of the beef is grassfed except the finishing part. They do have some all grassfed and buffalo which is good. I've heard Trader Joe's carries grassfed, but I'm not sure. Their meat case never looks appealing to me- too prepackaged looking.

I live in Walnut Creek, which is fairly close to Sacramento. I get Purity Farms ghee at Whole Foods, and since the PP mentioned Whole Foods in Orangevale, I'm pretty certain they would have it too. Recently, my Whole Foods started carrying a new ghee called Ancient Organics, which is made from Straus butter. Straus is a company on the coast here in the Bay area and their cows get some rich pasture. The ghee is MUCH richer in color than Purity Farms.

Where is the Whole Foods in Orangevale? I didn't know there was one. I'd much rather get the meat there than at Trader Joe's. I really don't like getting all those styrofoam packages (and we eat A LOT of meat). And they definitely have totally grass-fed (and finished) beef? Ds can't eat it if it was finished on grain.

The farmer's market sounds like fun, although we missed it today , and we'll be there Mon.-Mon.. Oh well. Maybe we'll go next Sat. just for fun. My mom will be there then, too, and she would enjoy it.

I'll have to ask my aunt who it is that occasionally gives her eggs. Maybe they'll sell us some (maybe it's the person on Hickory?).

Thanks for all the good info!

Ooh! I want to try the Ancient Organics ghee! When I ate butter it was Strauss. How much does it cost? Do they say it's casein-free?

You could try the Sacramento Natural Foods Co Op. They do carry some raw milk and grassfed meat, and the produce section is all-organic. It's about 7 or 8 miles from Orangevale.

There is a Whole Foods at the corner of Arden and Eastern.

Is this in Orangevale? I don't recognize the street names (of course, that doesn't mean they're not in Orangevale ).

Thank you for the lists of farmer's markets! I'm printing it out to take with us.

I think it is in Sacramento or Carmichael. It will likely be north, and possibly west of where you are, but still will be closer than the Food Co-Op downtown. If you are going to the Elliot's on El Camino, it's less than 2 miles from there.

I can, however, whole heartedly reccommend our local food co-op as an alternative to Whole Foods. The prices tend to be lower, and it is open to the public. They do carry only organic produce, and it is a good selection, not just a few heads of lettuce and a hydroponic tomato or two. They don't carry out of season fruit and veggies, nor do they sell anything with hydrogenated oils. I called and checked for you, since it's a local call for me. They have grassfed beef, and they do carry Purity Farms Ghee, in both 7 and 20 ounce containers. They also have organic free range eggs. (I'm a vegetarian : so I didn't know much about the meat selection )

The Whole Foods I was talking about isn't in Orangevale, but it's in Carmichael at Eastern and Arden. They definately have grassfed steak, they often have grassfed ground beef. The rest of it is grassfed but grain finished. I have a very hard time finding totally grassfed around here.

We shop at the Elliot's on Greenback. It's only a mile or two from my aunt's house. I looked up on the Whole Foods website, and it looks like there's just the one in Sacramento. Oh well, I guess if we really need to we could go in just once. I hate going into Sacramento! We usually get most of our produce at Railey's. They have a fair amount of organic, and it's maybe 1/2 mile away. Those distances I can deal with. But maybe we can go to a museum one day and also hit the Whole Foods.

BTW, MissyH, if you're going to be in Albuquerque in Oct., maybe I can help you find products you might need (that's where we shop).

And thanks for the info about about the meat at Whole Foods. I guess if we decide to go there I'd better call ahead to make sue they have what we need.

It would be great to know where to get supplies in NM! Last time we went, we took our trailer and I could only fit about 3 half gallons of raw milk for 2 weeks. I think you said you don't drink it, but I wonder if you would know how/where to get it. I went to a Wild Oats there and don't recall seeing any in the store. We're going to be in Alamogordo for a few days, but then will probably head to Albaquerque. So go ahead and give me your sources in Albaquerque! Thanks!

I don't know if you visit here often, but they are putting another Whole Foods in over at the Roseville Galleria area.

I don't know how I missed this yesterday, but thank you! So sweet of you to call them for me! :

I'm feeling much more prepared now, thanks to you ladies.

MissyH, we're packing now, but I will get back to this when we get back home. If I forget, please feel free to remind me. I'll have to do some asking around about the milk, since we don't do dairy.

Thanks again everyone!

I don't remember how much it costs, but I don't think it was much more than Purity Farms. It also doesn't say casein-free, but I believe all ghee is. I'm allergic to casein and whey (in cow's milk, not goat or sheep) and I can eat regular butter, and ghee is even better.
