What has coconut oil done for you?

I'm newto TF but one of the first things I'd learned was about coconut oil being good for you. I started using it but not a ton. I just finished reading The Coconut Oil Miracle. Wow!! IT's hard to believe all of the stuff the book says CO can do for you.

What have you personally noticed changing since starting to use coconut very regularly?

Makes you wonder why more people don't know about the benefits/ or why they won't believe it. You'd think somebody would be selling it as the latest cure all.

Thanks,
Kelly

My nails look great. My hair grows supah' fast. I've gotten some nice womanly padding since eating it. What does the book say?

Skin is heaps better - not so dry. Don't seem to have as many winter lurgies (touch wood).

I've been eating a few tablespoons of it most days (either cooking my eggs with it or eating it raw in smoothies) for several months and haven't noticed any difference. But I like to think it's making me healthier in the long run.

Coconut oil has helped improve our immune systems considerably.

I started taking it when my hair was falling out post partum and man, it seemed to just stop that. It could have been that it was done falling out though, so I'm not sure.

DD had bad diaper rash at one point and putting CO on it cured it quickly. It was most likely yeasty type of a rash since it was very hot and humid those few days.

I think that it helped my milk quality too - when I pump now there seems to be a lot more cream that rises to the top in the fridge. My midwife saw my DD and inquired about her eating and I proudly said she's still 99% breastfed and her eyes popped open. She said that I must make cream instead of milk. DD is quite juicy as far as babies go. I looked it up at one point and apparently CO has plenty of lauric acid and that's one of the fats found in mother's milk.

Ds's growth dip evened out when I started eating co. And as he gained weight I (finally!) started to lose it. He is still probably 75% bf and stopped gaining for awhile, but now hes got some padding back.

I also think it has made my skin less dry and my hair stronger - afaik nothing can make you hair grow faster but good nutrition will make it stronger and thus less prone to breakage and falling out. My hair seems thicker and shinier. And I guess all must be looking good because I have been getting lots of compliments I use it as a moisturizer and it's in my deoderant too.

I also think it has helped overall by reducing my hunger, so I am much less inclined to be craving unhealthy things and can wait until I am able to prepare something good - but I kind of think that's TF on general - now thar I am getting what I need I don't have to go looking for it.

I'm starting to see more about co around - at my Y there is a board in the fitness center with a layout of superfoods and it is on the list. But yeah, it's too bad so many people are misinformed about fats, it is really fantastic stuff.

I've been getting the same, um, womanly padding lately - usually something that happens when I gain weight but I'm not gaining, so maybe it's to do with the CO? Also, I think I have less of an appetite when I'm taking it at least once a day. My skin has been softer with fewer bumps on the upper arms and upper back, but I don't know if that's the CO or skin brushing or other TF dietary things, or a combination of those things!

My hair was totally falling out. I still don't know why exactly. Maybe just a general poor nutrition thing. I had always had a thick head of hair, and then it got really thin and stringy and the drain kept getting clogged up with all my hair. Since the coconut oil, the drain isn't clogging up so much and my hair is starting to look fuller and healthier, even shiny. People have actually complimented me on it, asking me what I changed (like new hair cut? highlights? etc.). No changes, except coconut oil. (Well, CLO too and avoiding grains and just eating more TF in general, so it might be the CO in conjunction, you know?) Also, my skin is looking fantastic, after a lifetime of acne! And I am losing weight!

Totally don't know, so may I ask how do you all eat CO? I have some, and wash my face with it. But have not eaten any. I read where some one cooks eggs in it, I'm guessing tea maybe???

TIA for any in put.

I've tried cooking eggs in CO but I hate the way it tastes, so I use butter for that instead. I like coconut milk in hot cocoa, but I don't like eating CO straight. It's too oily tasting, whether I'm eating it hard out of the fridge or melted into tea.

I've heard of people making candy out of coconut oil (and sweetener and maybe shredded coconut and other flavorings) and storing in the fridge, but I haven't tried that yet.

I make this as a treat and it is so yummy.

I also use it as cooking oil. Last night I made roasted cauliflower with it and it had a nice flavor. I agree with Ruthla though..it does not mix well with eggs IMO. You can melt it in tea and some people enjoy that. I don't like it because it floats to the top and you get one big gulp of oil. I also love the coconut milk cocoa in the winter. I also make curries and smoothies with the milk and oil.

I tried some in hot tea... taste terrible. I'll think about cooking with it, thanks for the ideal NCM.

Ruthla I take your word for it on the eggs with CO.

rosidox me too !! My hair is falling out.

I use it on my skin/face as a moisturizer and with salt as a toothpaste. I love how my skin feels and I love how clean my mouth feels after brushing (I add a few drops of peppermint eo to it).

When I remember to take it before meals, it helps to curb my appetite. I do take it in tea, although I agree, is unpleasant. But I make honeybush tea (which is uncaffeinated) and add a touch of raw honey (about 1/2 teaspoon), some raw milk and the CO. It tastes much better that way. I end up doing about 1/2 tea 1/2 milk with the CO and honey. I prefer it in yogurt and hot cocoa, but can't drink hot cocoa before every meal!

I use it on dh and dd all time for their skin. I massage dd with it and use it on the occasional reddened skin.

DH has really rash-prone skin and likes it for soothing his dry skin.

There's more but dd needs me.

I have only more recently incorporated CO so I haven't really noticed any benefits yet - except the first week I had it every day I noticed I was....uhm.....very 'regular' LOL Not sure if that was why!

I actually like my eggs fried in CO - not so much scrambled though. I wouldn't serve them to DH like that, but I think it tastes fine!

My favorite right now is to take a piece of toast (either ezekiel that I buy, or homemade sourdough...) add butter, CO, almond butter and raw honey. YUM!!!! My DD likes it too, so we'll have it in the morning while I am making eggs and such or as an afternoon snack.

I am eager to try some of the different 'balls' that posters havve mentioned - they sound good!

I have found that scrambled eggs taste better if fried in butter, and then CO melted on them when they are done. I miss the butter taste when I don't fry eggs in it.

I've used it as a sunscreen and it helps, but not for long exposure. But put on after a sunburn, it turns it to tan, no peeling! And it feels so good to spread it on.

For years I have had this weird fungal thing on my elbow. It caused me no pain, never itchy, just a weird roundish thing, kind of hardish. Anyway, after a half-hearted stretch of using CO as lotion on my arms, I noticed that the hardness was gone and the fungal thing almost completely disappeared. Seriously, I didn't try that hard, and I've had it for years so I am sure it's the CO that finally took it away.

I take a couple tablespoons each morning in my hot chocolate. I love it. Warm some (raw) milk, add a spoonful of cocoa powder, a spoon of whatever sugar you like, maybe some extra cream, and a big scoop of CO. Very good and it gives me a lot of energy and stays with me a long time. If I know I have a busy morning I add more cream and more CO. Good stuff!
when I'm regular with CO, I can refuse the extra goodies. Even though our ice cream is NT, I said no tonight w/o even hesitating. Just didn't want anything more after dinner.

My nails aren't as ridged. And when in the sun, I don't burn anymore. Even if I'm out all day. And that's taking it internally, although I do put it on my skin after showers every several days.

I notice my energy flag if I slack off. But I've always taken it with CLO, and lots with BO, so it could be the combination of those that help me there.

My hair fell out big time when I was using a lot of soy. So I don't know if it was that I began CO, or because I quit soy cold turkey, that it stopped coming out in handfuls.

CO toothpaste

[QUOTE=rosewater;8829574]I use it on my skin/face as a moisturizer and with salt as a toothpaste. I love how my skin feels and I love how clean my mouth feels after brushing (I add a few drops of peppermint eo to it).QUOTE]

What proportions do you use for toothpaste? Do you make it up in advance? Also, what salt do you use--refined stuff or the good stuff? I'm looking for a better toothpaste alternative and am trying to incorporate CO into skincare, so this goes right along with that!

HAHA I love your quote in the context of the TF forum......

I like the taste of scrambled eggs made in coconut oil. It was unusual at first, but now I think it's great. Butter is good too, though. CO is also great for frying pancakes!
