Baby girl general update...some advice also

Well, the little girl we were calling Clare will now officially be Charlotte Clare.

Charlotte had surgery this morning to correct an intestinal blockage. We learned yesterday that she has Down Syndrome, and as part of that, some common associated defects. She'll have to have heart surgery in a few months, but otherwise she's doing good, and once her intestines start up and get to work, then she'll come home.

To me, she's pretty, though she did look a little "flat" to me at first - she did get pushed out in a hurry!! I was fondly calling her my little funnyface because she would squish her face up and purse her lips like she was blowing kisses and also because I love Audrey Hepburn (almost named her Audrey). Now that we have a diagnosis of Down's, I guess it would not sit well with most people if they heard me call her funnyface. : But it's a term of endearment and when I look at her I don't see anything wrong. She's got bright blue eyes and fat pink cheeks and sweet little rosebud lips.

Now, my advice to all of you --- don't forget to stick to your diets!!! Once it's all over, you still gotta eat for two! It's easy to get dehydrated or constipated. Remember your stool softener!!!

And no matter what happens, don't try to be Supermom!
I feel so deeply for these poor mamas at the NICU that are pushing themselves beyond the limit and getting sickly. Chances are, none of you will end up there, but it's just as easy to overdo it at home too.

I just have such a love and respect for new mamas and their babies and I just want everyone to get on well and be healthy and happy. I wish you all the best!!!

Congratulations on your precious little one! I'm sure you guys are going through a whirlwhind of emotions right now. I will be thinking of her that she stays strong and healthy in her recovery and going forward!

I actually have another online friend who had a son with Down's a couple of years ago. He also had to have intenstinal surgery just after birth as well as heart surgery later and they have overcome many obsticles since. She was asked to write a book about breastfeeding a child with Down Syndrome and it is in the process of being published. I'm sure it is going to be an amazing book. If you're interested in speaking with her, I can ask her if it would be okay to give you her email. I'm sure would be happy to answer any questions you might have about your little girls health, etc. She is also not very "mainstream" and would fit in well here so I think you might enjoy talking to her. PM me if you're interested!

Here's Johnny's (her son) caringbridge site if you want to read her journal history. She has kept track of their journey with down syndrome since he was born and maybe you can get some info/advice from reading that too. Although I'm sure you're a very busy lady these days!

Thank you Mandy. I looked over that site and it looks beautiful. I will want to speak with her so I will pm you my address later.

They told me that Downs kids usually don't breastfeed very well. I said, "Yea, well that was before we came along!" We'll show them, I thought! She's a lucky kid because she's got one determined mom! I'm up pumping now. I am especially interested in what experience your friend has to offer.

All you ladies are wonderful and I thank you all for reading (listening to me) and responding.

OH!!! who knew the heart could just keep pouring out the love! You think that after your first you could never love more than you do already, then the second one comes and you find your heart just gets twice as big.....then the third comes and wow! Love, love, love!!

And I just wanna send out even more love to all the babies who are here already and to the ones still sleeping peacefully in mommy's tum!

You're so sweet!!! I'm so sorry to hear about the problems Charlotte is having. A very good friend (IRL) had a little boy with Down's who also had the surgeries after birth. They also nursed (it was hard, but they overcame, thank God!) Today, he's a very bright (and curious!) 3 yo boy! Good luck! She'll definately be in my prayers for a quick recovery!

Aunt G, how lucky Charlotte is to have chosen you! You have so much love and determination and strength, I'm especially glad you had a UC since too many tests may have landed you in hospital as a precautionary measure, considering her hearth, et. al. I too just want to say that the girl I know with Down's (we did her mom's respite care for a while, she's my yoga teacher and a good friend) is one of the most exceptional little people I know. She has 2 teenage sisters and I think that helps her and her mum enormously.
You just take care of that precious thing while she needs you and keep pumping!!!

Congratulations again on your sweet baby girl. She has such a beautiful name. I hope her surgery goes well and that she's home with you again soon.

I'm sorry your baby girl is hospitalized for now - I hope she is home safe and well with you soon! You sound so in love and strong (I hear the roar of a mama bear ), but do take care of yourself as you recover and cope with all those wacky postpartum hormones, not to mention the additional strain of dealing with the medical issues.

I think your terms of endearment for baby Charlotte are all kinds of adorable!

I used to call HM tomato face when she was an infant because she could get THAT mad and her face would get THAT red. I mentioned this to her recently and she was mortified. I've been sworn to secrecy - no one else who knows her is EVER allowed to know.
