once again, looking for midwife or doula in central MO

a few months ago i posted, wondering how to find a midwife. we finally found one(she is a lay midwife) but now, 3 mo & 2 weeks before due date she has backed out, due to personal reasons. we had such a tough time finding a midwife that would come out to us that i am now wondering what to do. my partner and i have tossed around the idea of going it alone, but we both have slight reservations since this is our first (not completely opposed though). So, now, we are thinking of a doula but, once again, i'm wondering if we can find one that will come all the way out to us.

for those who asked last time what my location was: i am a little over 1 hour from jefferson city and columbia, and about 30 minutes from sedalia (south of hwy 50). there was a doula from columbia that responded before, however i have since lost her info. if you have suggestions we welcome them!

thanks for your help!

Hey there!

I don't have specific names for you, but you can contact Doulas of North America and find out who is a practicing doula in your area.... try www.dona.org. Someone there might have an idea for a midwife, too.

Good luck!

Have you checked out the new birth center in Columbia?

You could do a search for Friends of Missouri Midwives. They may be able to help you. DONA probably won't be of any help since direct enrty midwifery is illegal in MO.

I'm sorry, my MO geography is nonexistent, but there are two ICAN (Int'l Cesarean Awareness Network) chapters in MO, one in KC and one in Springfield. The chapter leaders will know of midwives in the area and possibly have contacts in other parts of the state. Anita had a homebirth herself and Annette is planning one. The contact info for the two chapters is:

ICAN of KC
Anita Woods
(816) 505-0116
ICANofKC@kc.rr.com
home.kc.rr.com/icanofkc

ICAN of Springfield

Good luck!

thanks to everyone for replying. we have decided to birth our baby ourselves. this was our original thinking when we found out we were pregnant, but because of pressure/concern from family & friends we decided to go the midwife route. in our search since losing our midwife we have come to the conclusion that our original decision was the right one. not being able to find a midwife since was a sign for us. we are very comfortable and much more relaxed since we decided that it's up to us now. thanks again!

Very cool. I'm sending you lots of positive vibes. I wish I could be so at peace with our birthing choices.
