Hmmm. Not smelling too fresh....

I've just started using this spray-on deoderant made from "purified water; Natural Mineral Salts" (I got it at Walmart).

Before I used it, I scrubbed my underarms with baking soda...

But I stink! Is there a period of adjustment time here....and how long is it?
I'd say no. I've been using it (the roll-on), off and on, for about 10 years and have never experienced a break-in period. My mom is here and commented that she's never experienced a break-in period either. Like me, she has used it, off and on.

The mineral formulations don't work for everyone. Also, consider that it might be a bad bottle.

I use the actual crystal and I think it works great. I make sure to apply it RIGHT out of the shower while I'm still wet. I apply it for about 30 seconds each side and make sure I get the whole area.

I find that NONE of the natural stuff works (crystals, etc) IF I drink coffee. If I stay off the junk, works like a charm!
It might not be the right thing for you. I recently had to try several different things because some didn't work for me, and some irritated my skin (rash in the pits, NO FUN!). Right now I'm using plain ol' coconut oil and it works very very well, and so far no irritation.

Marni,
not good news for me...I'm a coffee drinker and don't see that stopping in the near future, however much I wish it would!

Hubris,
Coconut oil works? I had no idea! I might try that.

Interesting. I use it on my face as a moisturizer, never thought it would be a deodorant though...

Check out the thread - "Natural Deodorant that works" and I outline the baking soda, apple cider vinegar and coconut oil method that I use. Basically, you scrub your armpits with a lot of baking soda in the shower, rinse, spray strong apple cider vinegar (1/2 diluted or stronger; strong as you'd like) and then do a quick rinse. Slather and rub in coconut oil after you get out of the shower. Don't be skimpy with the amount of bs/acv/coconut oil you use. It works pretty good for most people, and is definitely working really well for me. It's kind of like commercial clear deodorant gel - it dries clear and doesn't get on your clothing (I'm not sure about super silky stuff or completely synthetic materials, but for the cotton and cotton blend clothing I wear, including work clothing (which have spandex blends in them), it doesn't stain or do anything to it.

You should also check out this thread about Mineral Salt Deodorants http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=595224. Many of the women experienced the same thing you did-a DETOX period. When switching from using the conventional deodorants/antiperspirants (that contain aluminum, synthetic ingredients, and other harsh chemicals), DETOXIFICATION (strong body odor) is common, and can last several days until your body adjusts. It varies from person to person.

I tried the crystal spray too and I STANK badly! I tried it for 3 weeks though because I had heard of the detox period. It never worked for me. After that I tried J/A/S/O/N deoderant and the same thing. I stank! I have gone back to Dove.

I was so mad that my DH just informed me that he ran out of deoderant and stole my now un-used crystal spray from me because I wasn't using it and it works for him! How is it that it doesn't work for me, but it works for my DH who spends all day working outside in 115 degree weather?!?!?!? : I'm baffled.

KMK Mama,

Re:Jason Deodorant
That deodorant is a joke! It gave me the worst smelling BO ever-after just two hours of use.

Re:Crystal Deodorant
Over the past year, I've tried all forms of the crystal deodorants: roll-on, rock/stick, and the spray. In my opinion, the roll-on and the rock/stick are the most effective. The spray just didn't work for me no matter how much of the product I used-although it seemed to work okay for me fiance' (go figure!) He liked applying the crystal stick better than the spray and has been using the Pitrock brand (stick) for over a year and it works like a charm on him-he never smells! I recommend that you try the roll-on. I use Crystal Body roll-on and it works for me. It doesn't go on as wet as the spray-it's more like a gel. And you don't have to wet it first like the rock or stick versions. So, it's more convenient.

I previously posted some tips on applying the crystal deodorants on this thread http://www.mothering.com/discussions...=595224&page=2. Try it and see if it helps you.

Thanks, I'll look at that next time I go to the health food store.

Jason's IS a joke. I have also tried Toms of Maine and it made my armpits peel and flake. I got sick of spending $6 every time I switched.....those deoderants are too expensive to NOT work!

If you are searching for a natural deodorant that works for you, but don't want to spend your money on the full size bottles in case they end up not working, http://www.mothernature.com/shop/sec...x.cfm/s/122119 offers sample and travel sizes of many of the brands mentioned in this forum: Crystal deodorants (all forms), Lafe, Kiss My Face Liquid Rock, Alba, Lavilin etc...(even Jason deodorants).

I got hip to them a year ago when I realized how much money I was spending on natural deodorants that didn't do anything for my BO and I ended up tossing them in the garbage. I ordered several brands to try from mothernature.com. They were all very generous travel sizes that lasted much longer than a few applications. They also ranged in price from $.89C to $1.34. So, it is very economical to pick up the travel sizes so you don't have to worry about wasting your money on a full-size bottle that doesn't work. I know the Lavilin is around $12.00 or $13.00; so the $1.09 is reasonable it if it doesn't end up performing well.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm wondering how to order the sample sizes? I looked and did not see anything about samples :

Just wanted to say that JASON roll-on works for me, and quite well.

When making the initial switch from antiperspirant to natural deodorant, I tried a crystal deodorant and STANK something fierce. Detox period? Incorrect application? My body chemistry? I don't think I applied for 30 seconds, as pp's have suggested. I ended up throwing it in the garbage.

Coconut oil seems to work for me, too. (Thanks for the tips on another thread ) I will probably use it once my JASON deo runs out...

Mothernature.com has a long list of natural deodorants that they sell-seven pages or more-so you have to look very carefully. The description usually states "trial size" or "mini" and the prices are usually a $1.00 and change. The Lafe's crystal trial size is more-$2.00 and change-because it comes with a holder for the deodorant stone. They may be sold out of some of them, so you can just send an email an inquire about their availability.

I tried the Jason Tea Tree oil stick deodorant (a trial size thank goodness) and in approx. 2 hours or so, I had noticeable BO. All I did was walk a few blocks to church and back home on a relatively cool spring day. Initially, the tea tree scent is very strong, so it gives you the impression that it will effectively deodorize, but once the scent fades, you will quickly see how well it doesn't work. EV coconut oil, which doesn't even advertise as being a "deodorant", in my opinion, works better than the Jason deodorant. Its good that it works so well for you.

Grrlsix, I wonder if there's a difference between the solid and roll-on? I exercise at an intense level regularly, and made it through a major heat wave without stinking. Oh gosh, maybe I'm not smelling myself but everyone else is... No, I'm sure DH would have said something by now.

You've really got me thinking. To experiment, I am going to wear NO deodorant on a day I am at home, just to see if there's a difference. Maybe it WAS a detox period when I tried the crystal. OR perhaps I simply don't smell as much now that I'm off the conventional anti-perspirants.

KMK_mama, were you using JASON solid or roll-on? Just curious. I wouldn't give up on the natural products yet. It seems to me that everyone has different body chemistry and has to find what works for them. I like the trial-size idea, but make sure you try the coconut oil first. You might be pleasantly surprised.
