I think perhaps you´ve had no response because the Q is a bit vague, there are many types of plastic and many concerns about it, i can´t be really specific about facts and figures but it might help to look at the following....
Environmentally plastic is a diaster, it is made from oil (which we are running out of), it´s production causes pollution, if it is thrown away it takes a looooooooong time to degrade and if it is recycled it is often sent a very long way (a uk supermarket ships its pastic bags to china for recycling).
Healthwise, we all suffer the effects of the above and some pastic leaches or offgases, i.e. it is not stable, it can interact with foods stored within it for example. There are concerns over some plastics and childrens toys - which inevitably end up being chewed.
And personally I just find that most plastic products are not fit for purpose, they are cheap imitations of some older, more robust product. Take for example the plastic carrier bag - absolute rubbish! You can´t carry heavy weights in them for fear the handles will snap or at the least leave nasty red marks where they have cut into your hands. You can reuse them a only few times before this inevitably happens and then you have to stick them into landfill. Or we could just use sturdy cloth bags or baskets that will last far longer and have a far smaller environmental impact, like we used to, ain´t progress marvellous!
Well done for reducing, reusing and recycling, we´d all be better off with a lot less plastic in the first place.
Hope someone with more facts appears soon!
