At this point will it hurt the baby? I'm 38wks starting today. I know you're not supposed to take ib prophen the first/last trimester, but last night I woke up with one of the most painful migrains this whole pregnancy. I was so sick and it hurt so bad I was crying. So I took a 400mg prescription motrin. Do you think there's any harm to the baby? I'm a little freaked out now of course now that I can think straight. This whole pregnancy I've been so good and only took motrin maybe 3-4 times during the second trimester and have just dealt with the migrains the rest of the time. But last night I couldn't. I don't know why it was so painful, maybe a hormone surge? Because it was so painful/sudden I'm wondering if I should call my mw today, but I have an appt tomorrow.

I think you should consider asking in the birth professionals section. Hope everything's alright!

Of course ask your midwife, but from what I know the reason for saying no Motrin at this time is that Motrin it's related to asprin (blood thinner) so can increase bleeding- meaning it's not great to have in your system when giving birth. I would assume it clears out of your system pretty quick.

It is not recommended at any stage of pregnancy. It can have effects on the closing of the ductus in the baby's heart after birth (closing prematurely, causing pulmonary hypertension). It is also associated with causing low fluid levels and interfering with labour starting. Tylenol (less effective, I know) can be used safely in pregnancy. Also try lots of water, a small amount of caffeine, and a cool cloth over your forehead in a darkened room.

She said that since we're 38wk start that the baby is fully developed and there really is no harm at this point, but to try tylenol first next time. The concerns would have been bleeding and that heart heart, but she said it shouldn't effect the heart at all. Since we've been dealing with this the whole time and have tried everything, she knows I wouldn't have taken motrin if it weren't extreme, since usually I suffer it out by dulling the pain with tylenol so I can at least try to function during the day. I still feel a little bad, but I don't know what my option would have been otherwise. Imitrex would have been the only relief with that much pain, which I don't have and would not have taken.
As far as bleeding, I'm learning it's a 50/50 opinion with both mw's and ob's on how much it effects pp bleeding. With ds they gave me motrin in the hospital, only because I requested it due to a two day migrain, not delivery pain. And then with this pregnancy I found out it can cause bleeding. One of my mw's is ok with it, one is not. I'm going to stick with extra strength tylenol if I can this time.

What about vicodin? Obviously it's not great for baby BUT it won't cause any blood thinning issues.
I had to take vicodin when I had shingles during this pregnancy. I tried really hard not to take any but the pain was just too unbearable, I couldn't function even a tiny bit it was so bad. From what I could find on the net it's one of those drugs that is OK to take if absolutely needed but obviously it can be addictive so you have to be careful with it.
Or what about Tylenol 3 (that's the kind with codeine). I remember they gave me that in the hospital after having ds. I don't know how anything about it's safety while prego though.
I'm just trying to throw out some other options to google!

Rachel-I'm allergic/bad reactions to both of those. My drug allergy list is like a mile long. Found out when I broke my arm and had reactions to almost everything they gave me. Then found more when I had my wisdom teeth out. So I'm pretty much stuck with reg tylenols, ib prophens and I guess anything similar? It really sucks sometimes, but has made me look for alternatives. The one thing I've found to help me is sniffing hot pepper w/ migrains, but I have to catch it in the begining-waking up to pain & vomiting is way past that.
I've gotten pretty used to living with migrain pain since I don't like to take anything unless it's super bad and I'm throwing up, so I think it's contributed to my higher pain tolerance.
