Found a very Earth friendly litter box!!!

Ok, first of all, I only got this thing last night, so I should probably wait a while to tell you how great it is, but I can't!!

I've always felt terrible about all the cat litter I put into the landfills. I've been buying the cystal litter for the last few years as the cats rejected pine litter, the dog kept eating the corn litter and I didn't liek the newspaper litter.

This isn't just a new litter, it's a new system (this sure is sounding like a commercial...) It's a special box that holds safflower seeds as the "litter". The safflower seeds don't absorb moisture or odor (apparently). The way the box is made, the urine goes through the seed and drains into a little container that pulls out like a drawer and you flush the urine in the toilet!! (you'll have to scoop poops)

I put it next to the old box last night and expected it to be ignored as my cats are picky, but there was pee in the drawer this morning!

I'd love to hear how you feel about your new litter box after you've had it a couple of weeks...I'm really curious about odor issues. Are your kitties OK with the seeds? Thanks!

I'll be sure to update in a few weeks. So far, so good. The cats have accepted it and I've taken away their old box.

Only negavtive so far is that the seeds track.

I'm subbing to this, too. My cat rejected pine and newspaper, so I would love a better alternative to the clay litter! This thing looks really cool!

I really am impressed with this thing so far. The only thing that would maek it better is if it were automated to do somehting about the poops.

OK, updating now that I've had the thing almost a month

Pros: very inexpensive to maintain
environmentaly friendly
low odor

cons: have to empty urine container daily
safflower seeds track

I'm liking it. I empty the urine drawer every night (have to because my cat pees soooo much and also because if the pee sits, it start to smell). It's saving me major amounts of money. I was (well, the cats were) going through a bag of crystal litter every week and a half, so I was spending about $30/month in litter. So far I've had this thing set up a month and I haven't had to change the litter!! That's amazing with my pee machine of a cat.

I keep expecting to have to change it, but any time I smell anything, I just wash out the urine drawer and the smell goes away.

I'm going to go ahead and order some replacement seeds for when these do reach their limit, but so far so good!!

I'm imagining fields of safflower from the discards

Hey, they have a track-less litter mat http://www.smartcatbox.com/index.asp...PROD&ProdID=12

How long does a bag of seed last?

...this is making me want a cat...
