March '08 Homebirths - Page 3

I thinkwe're going to have a hb...hopefully if my husband doesn't back out on me!
My first 4 were assisted homebirths. We're still deciding if we want our midwife or we'll do our next UA.

Planning our fourth water homebirth, second unassisted birth.
I will have prenatals with my midwife because I like to, but the birth part we enjoy much more on our own. I have very short labors, fingers crossed for another short one!

We're planning a homebirth with a midwife.

We are very fortunate to have an excellent midwifery system in our province that is fully funded by medicare. They are your primary care provider for the entire pregnancy, delivery and post partum if you choose to use them. They will do hospital or home births.

I've been studying midwifery and homebirths for several years now (like many ladies here at MDC I'm sure) so I'm very pleased to be planning our own event now!

DH is 100% supportive. He routinely says things like: "pregnancy is not an illness." "Birth is NORMAL." "Birth is PERSONAL." He's looked through pretty much every text book I have, and every Mothering Magazine in the house.... and he's still my manly, hairy-chested hero. He's the BEST.

We don't know where in the world we will be when #2 comes along, so we are very pleased to have #1 where we have lived for several years and have access to excellent care.

Is this where we can all talk about our homebirth plans???

Trin.

I'm kinda scared about a UC. What all do I need for it? I'm also wanting to use water birth too. I guess I have a while to plan for it and prepare us for it. It would be a lot easier than loading ds up for the hospital and waiting on someone to get there to watch him.

I need a UC coach and mentor I guess. :
I would read all the linkds and hang in the unassisted birth section

Tub works fine and anything you would have for a home birth...snacks, juice to drink, towels to dry baby when ready,
you don't even have to tie the cord if you wait long enough....

Oh and trust your inner wisdom

YAY! Found out our new midwife is great, and that our homebirth and prenatals are now covered 70% under our insurance! WHOOP!

Me too, me too! DS was born at the hospital (completely unmedicated and relatively low-key birth... it was after the birth that bothered me!). I am so excited to be having this one at home. I haven't contacted any of the midwives yet, but will when we get home from vacation next week!

We're doing one! The only local CNM who does homebirths is over an hour away, though, which means I have to schlep out there for prenatals...which I'm not thrilled about. But she's supposed to be great; we're meeting her next week.

CPMs aren't legal in our state either, which would be ok except that our insurance won't cover it. And we can't afford to pay out of pocket--no way.

But I'm really excited about doing this--had a hospital birth last time, and although it wasn't too bad, I never want another.

I love my homebirth midwife!! She's wonderful.

I had a hospital transfer with my first birth and then a beautiful homebirth with my second. I'm working towards another homebirth this time.

All the best,
Emily

I am working towards a home birth this time. With my first child I did not even think of that as a possibility. Where I live, in Norway, it is not usual at all. But now I know more, and DH is into it too, so I am hopeful!

we are planning our second UC. I have late babies, but my edd is 3/28. I am pretty sure I will birth in April. My babies like to take their time!

I would love a homebirth, but I doubt I'll get my DH on board. So we'll compromise with VBACing at a birthing center with a midwife.

I have no idea how we're going to afford this! But, actually, with DS#1, with an OB in a hospital, our portion was roughly similar to what we would have paid if we went completely out of pocket with our midwife. So, I guess I have the reassurance that we'd be struggling either way - but with the midwife, we get it all paid BEFORE the baby's born!

We're planning a homebirth too. We are fortunate that midwifery is legal in UT and licensure is optional. I have quite a few options. We are going to interview my top choice for a midwife soon. From what my friends and the grape vine tell me she is ok with just doing prenatals and not being there for the UC all the way to rubbing your back the whole time you are in labour. I hope that is true. My ideal is a UC, but DD was posterior and I think if I had had a doula maybe I wouldn't have gotten the epidural.

our first UC we paid right around $200 for some of the things deemed 'necessary'. We found that 90% of what was in our kit was unneccessary. The only things I plan to purchase are chux pads, a drop cloth or two, a mattress cover and a stainless colander (we used a plastic one last time and that sort of bugged me.) I grow herbs and have a great herbal store (good frineds with the owners) so I have available to me the herbs I need either through them or through my garden or whatever I have dried since this will be a Spring birth.

I honestly do not see how birth should be expensive, even at home, unless you are dealing with a midwife or a doula, and of course you have to pay them, however, I feel that a lot of midwives should be a little more willing to trade or barter for some of their services for wimmin who just cannot afford the entire fee....that's the socialist in me speaking though

I am so amped and excited and I still have many Moons to go before this baby is here!

Have any of you started gathering supplies for your births?

I haven't met with our midwife yet, but will be in a couple of weeks. She will give me a list of things to have on hand at home for the birth.

I'm pretty sure I know all that we will need, I've been reading about this and hanging out on MDC for many years!

sarahtar: that's what we were running into this time. I actually got a quote from the docs on how much it would be, and it was roughly the same. Then I found out our insurance covers a hb and m/w, so we're good to go now.

mnearthmomma: I agree that things should be a little "looser." With our last birth, the midwives were 100% free.

trin: No, haven't started gathering yet. I usually wait till the end. And with my history of m/c...well it speaks for itself.

Hi everyone. I'm newly pregnant with my first (4w4d) but I am planning a homebirth, so I'd love to join in. I am meeting with my potential MW in two weeks.
