alternatives to plastics--SIGGs and Kleen Kanteen

Hi. I'm looking into getting DS a non-plastic water bottle but am confused about the health effects of aluminum versus stainless steel. Kleen Kanteen is stainless steel and SIGG is aluminum and I know both are popular, but I've heard bad things about aluminum.

Anybody have any thoughts/resources/advice?

You don't have to worry about the Sigg - the aluminum is coated with a non-toxic epoxy lining, so nothing you'd drink would come in contact with the aluminum. Ds has a KK and we like it, but I've never tried a Sigg to compare. Try doing a search here for info - I know you'll find everything you've ever wanted to know about them!

I've never tried the Sigg, but we are really happy with our Kleen Kanteens. Personally, I am a tiny bit wary of the coating and the aluminum. The Siggs do have cute designs though, and our compromise was to have the KKs with cute stickers on them.

I carry a Sigg everywhere I go, I just wash it every night. My kids are still using plastic water bottles (*gasp) because
*the Sigg dents very easily
* They are expensive, and my kids constantly lose their water botttles at daycare/school
* they tend to get stinky if you don't wash them every night
I know, I know, I just need to break down and "invest". There are stainless steel and aluminum bottles for cheaper at our Coop, but I'm worried about safety. They are made by Enviro products, they're probably safe. who knows?

i had a sigg for awhile and liked it, but after dropping it once on pavement it got a hole in it. i have a klean kanteen and my son has a sippy cup kk and both have been dropped (& thrown) numerous times and are barely dented. i think since they're similar in price, go for the kk (or enviro), for durability.

Just an FYI that Born Free just came out with a plastic sippy cup that does not contain BPA.

Have you thought about Thermos? We bought a Foogo straw cup and quite like it.

The consensus (100%) from my very health-conscious, scientific-minded family members (i left the less-bright other family members out of my survey) is that stainless steel is much prefered to aluminum "because [aluminum is] more reactive, i.e. anything acidic or corrosive works away quicker on aluminum and may not do anything to stainless steel. Even tap water can be acidic. The only thing I"ve been told of that eats away at stainless steel is salt, and that's with direct contact and heat."

no-one seemed convinced that the lining in the aluminum canisters was much of a 'feature'.

Sorry, no scientific data to back this up...

we've had kks for almost 2 years now of daily use, no dents, odor, etc, they're great! Our sports caps always leaked so we use the metal cap which we like better anyway with the ring to hold onto!

I have quite a few Siggs and we just love them and use them daily. I also have some KK's including the sippy style one. But for some reason we just don't use the KK's as much. I guess the cuteness of the Siggs have an affect (is that the right version of the word?) on me! DD is almost 3 and really likes her Sigg bottle too and can even open it herself already!

I have a Sigg and like it, but do wonder about aluminum. I dropped it a few times and it did dent, which I was suprised at.
