pap smears in pregnancy, particularly early pregnancy, are very controversial. so when i told my doctor (with #2) that I wasn't going to do it, he said, "all right," and moved right along; the reasons for doing pelvic exams at that stage of pregnancy are sketchy at best, and he totally agreed with me. with #3 I saw a different doctor for my first appointment, and as I've mentioned, he wrote all these things in my chart about how i have trust issues and i'm non-compliant and whatnot. i mean he was just sooooo secure in his arrogance, and he claimed that never in 30 years of practicing medicine had any woman refused the first trimester pelvic exam. i sat through it all with a bemused smile on my face, feeling rather irritated. he said, "well, you're supposed to see Dr. Soandso, do you think he'll put up with this?" i said, "well, he did the last time," and that was that.
: (my doctor looked at my chart, asked me what happened, and then calmly drew lines through everything the other doctor had written, signing them with initials that were remarkably legible for a doctor. |

my favorite part of the whole appointment has to be when the midwife wanted to "test" my kegels. i don't know what she was expecting, but when i clamped down on her finger she actually SHOUTED. apparently my vagina is superhuman. dh said, "i coulda told you that."
