Baby's 1st birthday ideas?

Any ideas of suitable toys to make for baby's 1st birthday? My DS3 will be 1 next week and I still haven't bought/made anything for him (well I have bought a couple of new fancy diapers which I hope will have arrived by then)

I was thinking I might knit a baby gnome and a ball. I was hoping to koolaid dye some playsilks, I have the koolaid but I haven't found any suitable silk locally and its too late to order online now.

Any other ideas that are quick and easy before I cave in and go raid the toy stores LOL

Thanks :

ETA he is still very oral and everything goes into his mouth

I'm not sure about possible choking hazards (I suppose you could always change the stuffing) but the Purl Frog on purlsoho (free pattern) sews together very very quickly. I would think with a gnome, ball, and something like a frog, a one year old with older siblings and their toys would be set! Good luck and happy creating!

The ball sounds great, I don't think you can ever have to many balls.

I made DD a little shopping bag for her first birthday. Similar to thin but obviously smaller http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/clothbags.html she loved carrying her treasures around.

Most of the toys for which I've posted patterns were made before my daughter's first birthday, so they should all be safe:

DS will be one in three weeks, and I am planning on making some bean bags, and also want to make a felt crown for him to wear on his birthday, and maybe a few wet-felted balls...

My dd favorie first birthday present was from my mom, she got her a purse with a toy phone, metal keys on a keychain, an unbreakable mirror, a baby brush (with extra soft bristles) and a photo wallet with pictures of her with her family. While we have lost some of the items, she still loves playing with it, she puts all sorts of stuff in it and carries it around the house.
