The hospital birth center is less than a mile away. I plan to head over when the contractions get hard.

My mom doesn't live too far away, I'll have her come scoop up the kids before we head to the hospital and bring them to visit as soon as their new brother or sister arrives.

Hmmm...sounds too simple...but it worked pretty well last time. Labor was only about 4 hours with 15-20 minutes of pushing. I'm hoping for another one like that!!

we never did a sibling class-but we did prepare the kids for the birth by letting them see all my graphic pictures etc that I have in my doula/midwife books and by letting them watch births on TLC/Discovery channel. Granted, they aren't the best representation of birth (IMHO ) but it really did help.

When Hannah (my 4th) was born, her older siblings were 5, 3, 2--and they were all there and did GREAT. My 5 year old cut the cord

When Alexis was born (my 5th) - again, they were all there. I did have my mom there that time just in case to take out Hannah-but she was awesome.

With Bella (the 6th) was born, again-they were all there. They all did wonderfully....and Alexis was only almost 2

The key for us was preperation. Seeing the births, talking about it, seeing the pictures....it was vital.

Not only that, but my OB is an awesome man..he let the kids stand right next to him at my feet and explained everything that was going on when they asked.

there were no tears, no fear, no freaking out. I wouldn't even dream of NOT having them here for this babies birth.

OR depending on the time of day -- since it is a hour to the hosptial -- they could wait a while after you leave, see how you are doing (going slow, stall, progressing nicely) then head tot he town where the hosptial is and do something else -- walk the mall looking for a baby gift, go tot he libary and read, so to an indoor activy place, or whatever, and then be ready to cvome to you when the time is right ----- that might make the "when to call" questons a lot easier, since you can remove the hour drive from it -- YK?

Great ideas! I'll be having the baby in Boston so there is a TON for them to do there--children's museum, aquarium, etc. Why didn't I think of that???????

just trying to keep them close enogh to be there fast for the BABY event, but thazt timing is so hard, when you add in an hour drive.

We have an hour (mostly) drive to the hosptial -- so i know the challange of trying to think .. with that hour added in all the time..

My DS will be 3 years 9 months when the bambino is born. We're hoping for another birth center delivery and plan on having my DS stay at home with someone until right after the birth and then joining us at the birthing center. Just not sure who yet. I'll have to survey all the available candidates and see what will work.

My biggest concern is that the labor will go too fast to get someone to our house on time. I'm thinking we will have to have a list of folks to call that we could drop him off with on the way to the birthing center, just in case.
