OB wont see me anymore............

So I have been going to this OB for 12 years or so and decided I want a midwife and possibly a home birth this time, so I transferd my files to the midwife that delivers at a more natural hospital but does not do homebirths (still working on insurance covering HB) so I called the hospital to scedule an ultrasound appt (per midwives instructions) but I cannot scedule it midwives have to GRRRRRRRRRRRR midwives are closed today also, anyway I asked when they are sceduling for and they said middle of auguset (ugh) so I decided to call my old OB and scudule an ultrasound ( i have been a patient forever and insurance will cover it why does it matter ?) So the secrectary who I know well said she talked to the doctor and he refuses to see me since I want to have a homebirth and its to dangerous and risky. WHAT? So I'm like I just wanted some prenate care through him ( just ultrasound) and she like ya he wont do it and is upset that you would risk your babies life on a homebirth .......... I guess I should have expected an answer like that from him hes very pro drugs and c-sections but I cant say I wasnt pissed off Im dang I have been his patient for over 12 years, of course he probbly pissed I left anyway............ and the thing is he wasnt even there for either of my delveries both times he was doing c- secs when baby crowned- DS was delvered at last second by a midwife, and DD was delverd by 6 nurses no docter were even around. Anyway I just wanted to vent and say I will not be getting an ultrasound for quite a while now due to crazy scehduling at hospital.

Thanks for listeing

Betsy,

Sorry you are having a tough time! Sometimes these are the situations that give a glimpse into who someone really is. Now you know who your OB is anyway. I´m very fortunate that there is a pro-homebirth OB here. Even when the ultrasound showed the baby has a nuchal chord (around the neck once), he said that there is still no problem with home birth. Wish I could share him with some of you ladies up in the US.

From your ticker it looks like you have plenty of time to schedule your ultrasound, even for August, would be fine for you dates.

That said, I share your : It's a pain to always have to feel like you're swimming upstream just to do some normal and natural, you know?!

When I switched to a midwife in my 7th month, my OB sent a nasty letter telling me that he would no longer see me. It confirmed that I was making the right decision. He had been pushing an epidural since the 5th month and tried to give me a cathedar during my last birth which I had to forcefully refuse. I never looked back and my son was born peacefully in the birth center jakuzzi and he's perfectly healthy. I wouldn't trade that birthing experience for anything.

It does kind of knock the wind out of you though and it takes awhile to recover. I can suggest that you regain your confidence by reading Ina May Gaskin's guide to Natural Birth. I used a lot of that information to help me have a comfortable labor.

Sorry this happened

I am planning my 1st BG and it is my 4th pregnancy. I was told by my last midwife to never admit to an OB that you are doing a HB because red flags go up all the time.

In my situation, I hired a CPM and also interviewed an OB Dr. (he delivers at a small hospital 5 miles from my home).

I am doing "dual care". I will see the OB right up until I deliver and then stay home and call my midwife. He does not know that I am having a HB.

I recently spoke to my Bradley instructor and she told me I was being very smart about having a back-up and that it's very wise not to tell the Dr. that you are planning a HB. your OB probably got upset because you left him and he must also have a very low opinion on HB'ing in general.
It was nothing that you did. You were just exersizing your rights to choose where you wanted to birth. Get the u/s from your midwife and everything should be fine. GL

I'm not sure what the letter said exactly, but I think it's standard to send that sort of letter when files are requested to be transferred to another care provider. I think it has to do with liability issues regarding just who is responsible for the care of this patient. I was recommended to switch to a homebirth midwife by my previous CNM, whom I love and trust a great deal and with whom I had/have a good relationship. But when the files were transferred, I received the same letter from her office. Nothing personal, just the protocol.
That doesn't explain your former OB's refusal to schedule an ultrasound for you, but might make you feel better about the letter.

I am not sure exactly where at in Ohio you are, but I do know of at least one or two OB groups in the Miami Valley who might be accomodating to your needs if you are in that area.

As for US, there are several places that you can call that do both medical and for fun US's. I was very unhappy with my main diagnostic US and will be going to one of these places in the next couple of weeks to have the for fun one done. They have them in Cinci, Columbus and Cleveland area.

Let's try to "dis-incentivise" this treatment of women...

Gosh, I'm getting annoyed with OBs dumping pregnant women for pursuing homebirth. : It seems especially hypocritical when they are pro-choice when it comes to abortion and then have the nerve to refuse medical treatment of women who "choose" to birth outside the hospital. Women's body, women's choice my a$$!

While I understand any individual woman getting mistreated this way not feeling up to stopping this treatment planning for a birth after being dumped and all, I encourage women so dumped, even if it's months after the baby is born, to report this behavior to their insurance company. Dumping any client without a 30 day transition window for the patient seek other care, violates standard contracts doctors' sign when agreeing to take on a plan's patients and receive their payments. It's also a violation of lots of contracts to dump clients for a host of discriminatory reasons including seeing another provider. Doctors pay far more attention to an insurance company threatening to stop paying than a single pregnant woman not likely to profit him/her much. It's my suspicion after a threat from one or two insurance companies, mosts doctor will be more accommodating of future HBing moms than risk being kicked out of plan.

BV, kicked out for agreeing to only medically indicated u/s
