hypoglycemia

B/c my midwife was concerned about GD (my last baby was over 10 lbs), I agreed to a blood sugar check two hours after a protein meal (I had two scrambled eggs with sausage and cheese and drank a cup of milk) and my numbers were low...65. She suggested I make sure to have a protein snack midmorning and midafternoon. I was already doing that b/c I was aware that my bloodsugar has a tendency to get low, esp when I'm pg. It was going so crazy in the first part of this pg that I thought I was really sick until I realized I was almost 8 weeks pg.

Anyway, so does this mean that GD is no longer a concern? Is there anything else I need to know about it? Is low blood sugar harmful to the baby?

Sorry, am I reading this properly? You have a tendency to be hypoglycemic, but your midwife is concerned about you having gestational diabetes? Is that right? And, is the only reason she is worried about GD because you had a 10lb baby last time?

Diabetes can manifest itself as exceptional values, either high or low, for blood sugar levels. Many diabetics get hypoglycemic if they don't eat. Do you typically avoid carbohydrates and eat high protein? If so, then you probably are OK because your blood sugar won't swing that much. But you should know that 65 is a low number for a lot of people. Can you check your blood sugar 1 hour after eating? What is it then? What is your typical diet? Have you ever had episodes of high blood sugar? Eating every couple of hours is probably the best thing for you to do, which you seem to be doing anyway.

I guess it's mostly b/c of the big baby.

A high protein diet is what I'm working on. I'm eliminated simple sugars and most simple carbs and try to pair any carbs with appropriate protein. I don't know any of my other numbers and if I've ever had high blood sugar I wasn't aware of it. I have had many episodes of low sugar though (dizziness, feeling hot, feeling extremely hungry, anxiety, sweating, etc) which got better once I ate something.

Actually, I am hypoglycemic, and I'll caution you to avoid a "HIGH PROTEIN" diet, but it sounds like you're actually doing what my research has suggested to be the healthier way to do it, by eating a diet balanced with COMPLEX carbohydrates and healthy proteins. So, MY ideal balance is 6-10 g of protein and 35-45 g of complex carbohydrates in every meal (and ideally I eat every 1.5 to 2 hours). With the complex carbs, you'll still get a little boost when you eat, but it will take longer to wear off, and by the time it DOES, the protein will be kicking in. If you were to eat too much protein and not enough complex carbs, it could mess up your "balance" even more.
