Everyone READ: Preterm Labor

This is really important, Mamas. I gave birth to dd1 at 32 weeks and barely made it to 37 weeks with dd2. Make sure that you have these signs memorized and don't hesitate to call and/or go in for any reason. Even if something just doesn't feel right, but you don't have a specific symptom that you can identify. Trust your intuition. Don't let anyone bully or shame you into "not being a bother."

But, if you do end up giving birth prematurely, please remember that it is NOT YOUR FAULT. We can try to reduce the risk of preterm labor and birth, but sometimes there really is nothing that we can do. These mysteries of birth, life and death are just that...mysteries...

This is from the March of Dimes

What Is Preterm Labor?
Preterm or premature labor happens when you go into labor before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. This is too early for your baby to be born. Babies born too soon can have lifelong or life-threatening health problems.

Can Preterm Labor Be Stopped?
Many women are given drugs to try to delay or stop preterm labor. In some cases, birth can be delayed long enough to transport Mom to a hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Women may also be given medications that can improve the baby's health, even if the baby comes early.

Warning Signs
Here are the warning signs:

* Contractions (your abdomen tightens like a fist) every 10 minutes or more often
* Change in vaginal discharge (leaking fluid or bleeding from your vagina)
* Pelvic pressure—the feeling that your baby is pushing down
* Low, dull backache
* Cramps that feel like your period
* Abdominal cramps with or without diarrhea

What Should I Do If I Think I'm Having Preterm Labor?
Call your health care provider (nurse, doctor or midwife) or go to the hospital right away if you think you're having preterm labor, or if you have any of the warning signs. Call even if you have only one sign.

Your health care provider may tell you to:

* Come into the office or go to the hospital for a checkup.
* Stop what you're doing. Rest on your left side for one hour.
* Drink 2-3 glasses of water or juice (not coffee or soda).

If the symptoms get worse or do not go away after one hour, call your provider again or go to the hospital. If the symptoms get better, relax for the rest of the day.

Hmmm..."cramps that feel like your period", I didn't know that was a possible sign of preterm labor. I've been on vacation, not getting enough sleep, and probably not drinking enough, and definitely doing too much, and have had that yucky period crampy feeling a lot over the last 3 days. I've tried to drink water whenever I felt that way, figured I might be getting dehydrated, but it doesn't always help. Feel okay right now though. I've never had preterm labor before, so I'm less at risk, right?

Geez, Alisha...I guess my role is to be the big party-pooper today!

If water doesn't work, I would call. We all have different degrees of normal, kwim? But, it's better to communicate about it with your hcp. Sometimes, only one symptom of something happens at a time...but when you look at the pattern, the light bulbs go off...

Everyone can experience preterm labor, even if you've never experienced it before.

Please call.

I think I'll wait and see if it happens again today and watch how I'm feeling. And of course, try more water first. If I'm still feeling crampy, I'll go ahead and call. I honestly didn't know that was a sign of preterm labor. Thanks for letting us know.

thanks for this post...I called my mw last week bc of contractions, but, I really wasn't drinking/peeing enough and who knew braxtons second time around could actually hurt! There was question of a UTI, but, all looked good. Just a bit dehyrated. I'm on the thinner side so I tend to feel everything (more intense ovul pains, intense cramps). I've gotten a few today, but, it is HOT here, and only getting hotter tomorrow.

Off to get more water...hope you all do the same!

Thanks My eldest was born at 27 weeks...I wouldn't wish that nightmare on anyone. I've always said--don't ever hesitate to call, no matter how stupid you feel or think your question is. It could mean more than you know.

excellent post!! I might add this PSA: preterm labor, premature birth and even MC has been conclusively linked to gum disease (periodontitis) even very low level chronic you don't know you have it gingivitis... soooooooo brush, floss and rinse daily and see your dentist every six mos and taking 60 mg of CoQ10 daily sure can't hurt....
