citrus alternatives

DS is allergic to citrus. I have been doing okay with substitutes, but sometimes it is difficult, to find an equivalent in taste.
I found a salsa that works well to mix with avocado to make guac. I frequently use vinegar when necessary.
I find that I am often missing them and feel frustrated.

What subsitutes do you use for citrus?

foods we avoid: dairy, beef, soy, all gluten, all legumes, all nuts (except for occasional almonds), coconut, strawberries, chocolate, caffeine, shellfish, and I am now trying to learn how to avoid tomatoes.

hmmm,

we just leave them out. Like you, we sometimes use vinegar, especially when needed for chemical reasons (like preventing browning of avocadoes, apples, etc.)

Rosemary or lemon balm will give some lemony taste, though rosemary has its own distinctive taste too. Also sorrel is an herb/green that is lemony.

What about using more interesting vinegars. Not as a substitute but as an alternative. Apple cider vinegar, raspberry vinegar. Vinegar with a little sugar...

It's often easier to think of something as different, rather than trying to have it be like it was with an ingredient you can't use anymore. Mindbending, really.

We also do a lot of preparing a dish/sauce up to the point of adding something Calvin can't have, taking out his portion, and then adding the "bad" stuff to the rest. We do this a lot with tomatoes, since I like to use my crockpot and most of my favourite recipes use canned tomatoes. (tip - whole tomatoes are better for adding at the end b/c they're more cooked than diced tomatoes.)

No brilliant ideas here, though.
