OK, so I've been at this for about 2 weeks now, and I'm stumped. Am I missing something, and wwyd?

I need a 5 point harness carseat for my 6 yo. He weighs 46 lbs, 44" tall and impossible to safely contain in the Graco booster in our Chevy Astro van. I have 2 other carseats in the van, each on the middle captains chairs for my toddler and baby-in-waiting, and the 6 yo sits on the rear/bench seat of the vehicle, which has no headrests. He currently uses a Graco booster, and it's a terrible setup. When he sizes out of whatever seat I get for him, that seat will be passed down to his now - 2yo brother, who is built quite differently and already off the growth charts for his height. The other 2 seats are not in question and do not need to be replaced.

The van is not latch or tether equipped. I've not yet found out if I can have a tether hook installed. I cannot use the Apex seat, as the backseat of the van has no headrests. I cannot use the Regent, b/c once he hits 50 lbs I need the tether, and do not have tether in the vehicle.

I was able to get my hands on a Radian, and had my son sit in it. He would use the top slots, with just 1 inch before his shoulders are above them, sizing him out of the seat altogether, well before the 65 lb weight limit. The seat is narrow, and he complained about how the straps rubbed on his neck b/c the strap slots are quite close together. His 2 yo brother would inherit this seat, and he's already 30 lbs and 37 inches tall.

Other than putting my soon-to-be-born infant son in a rearfacing carseat in the backseat of the van to allow my 6 yo to use the Apex on a captain's chair so there is the required head support, I can't figure out any other options. We cannot replace this vehicle, I have to work with what we've got.

What variables/options/combos might I be missing? I've been looking at this for so long my head is spinning when I try to concentrate on it................

Have you contacted the vehicle manufacturer about getting a tether anchor retrofitted so you can use a Regent?

I'm kind of assuming it's not possible. The back doors to the "cargo area" of the van are double doors that both open outward. There's a metal bar between them in the center of the vehicle, but the doors are glass from the seatback height up to the very top of the doors, and the doorframe is quite thin on the top. Unless they can install the tether anchor in the floor, I can't see where it would go, as they are supposed to be directly behind the seat itself. They probably could put one in the center bar, but that kills my Big Idea.

We're removing the first captain chair so I can easily access the vehicle to put the baby into the rf'ing seat, and help the older kids get buckled in properly in the back. An Astro doesn't have dual sliding doors, and there is very little room between the captain chairs. I have to have room for 2 carseats on the back seat. If it ruins my plan, I'll learn to live with it, but it will mean that getting in and out will be very, very difficult for everyone.

Well, to be honest, your boy is tall enough that it doesn't make sense to spend any money on a five point unless it's a Regent. (The Radian is the seat with the next tallest straps currently available.)

So if you want a five point now your only option is the Regent. I would at least call the manufacturer and ask. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Oh, the tether anchor does generally go in the floor, fwiw.

Contact a dealership. I pulled this off of car-safety.org:

Most vehicles made since 1989 have factory locations for the installation of a tether anchor. Some older vehicles can also have an anchor installed by the dealer. Installation can vary in difficulty. Sometimes it is a specific parts kit that you can buy from the dealer, and some newer carseats also come with a generic anchor kit. Be advised that a generic anchor may not be compatible with all vehicles and should only be used if no specific part is available. The owner can easily install these in many cases. Other vehicles may require some drilling or other customization, and this should follow industry recommendations. Ford, GM, Chrysler and other makers have programs for free tether anchor installation at participating dealers.

Chevy is a GM brand, so you may get really lucky here.

Thanks! I KNEW a Radian was a waste of time and money at this point.....just needed to hear it from someone else.

And I realize all my blustering about the tether is just stupid. I won't know a darn thing until I call and ask. So I"m going to do something ELSE today, like making sure the baby's room is ready for arrival, and maybe I'll stop obsessing about the horrible safety setup I have in our vehicle.....

Yep, definately call and ask. And be persistant- I had to have a tether anchor installed in my Expedition 7yrs ago and more than one dealership told me it couldn't be done, they didn't know how to get the parts, etc. I had to call Ford's corporate office and get them to call the dealership. It was a PITA, but definately do-able. Good luck!! And I'd absolutely go with the Regent, too, but have heard that Britax will be issuing a statement tomorrow re: an issue w/the Regents, and many of the Babies R Us stores have pulled all the Regents from the sales floor, awaiting the info, so in case you were going to rush right out and buy one, I'd wait a day or so

Look into tethering options.

Another combination to consider is an EZ-On vest or harness (http://www.ezonpro.com/products/familyVehicle.shtml) for containment purposes in conjunction with a booster for head support. The EZ-Ons do require tethers, but you can purchase a tether kit from them and do it yourself.

Thanks for all the details!

I do think the Regent is really my best option. I need a 5 point now for my oldest, and will need one for my toddler when he outgrows his current seat, and I'd prefer that to be the Regent for him since he's already so tall (36.5 inches at 25 months). I'll call about tether options tomorrow, and hopefully I can make this all happen before the baby arrives!

GM will install tethers on BOTH SIDES of my van for the backseat, and I'm in the process of ordering my Regent!!!!!
Bethany, that's great about the tethers!!

Just double check that you will be able to install the Regent per the new installation instructions that became available yesterday. You can check the Britax website for the new Regent manual. It would suck to get that seat and not be able to get a good install

Yep, I've read that manual front, back, upside down and sideways. I'll also be taking it to a tech for an install check once I get it put in. The announcement was about using the short belt path vs. the long belt path, and I do believe it will be ok in my vehicle.

Thanks for all your opinions and suggestions!!

Awesome! I'm excited for you- I always do the happy new carseat dance when we get a new one!!

I spoke far too soon. Seems my van is a conversion package, which means the seats are not factory standard, which means that GM won't pay for the tether install. AND, it may not even work. The tether location based on where the GM seats would sit and how tall they are, etc., might not work with aftermarket seats. AND, the conversion company doesn't have any info on where and how to install a GM tether with their seats, nor do they even have tether packages.

Have I mentioned I just ordered the damn carseat?

Oh, how obnoxious :

Yeah, that about sums it up. The parts manager agreed to order the tether kits, at no cost to me, and "assess" the situation when they arrive. Which will probably be sometime at the end of the week. So that wasn't such a bad way to keep moving forward except....."well, Mrs Davis we might need your vehicle overnight, or for several days". Yeah, well, NO. I've got 2 kids, I'm 9 months pregnant and this is the only vehicle we have that comes equipped with carseats. NO WAY IN HELL I'm going to be this pregnant and not have a vehicle at my disposal. Can you spell STUPID? So it looks like I'll have to wait until after Baby makes his arrival. At least they didn't outright refuse to try, and I'm going to push hard to get it done for free.

Actually, perhaps you could wait and get a como/signo instead of a regent? My understanding is that it does NOT require a tether like the regent does? It goes to 70 lbs and the top slot is 19 inches high, so a full inch above the radian, which would give you 2 inches of growth, which could be years.....
It's not coming out til aug/sept, but you could just keep using the booster until then, I suppose.
OR, why not put the baby and 6 yr old in the captains chairs, and the toddler in the graco booster, harnessed in the rear seat? Then you can get the baby in and out easily, use an APEX for the 6 yr old (if you can get one with 19 inch slots).

OR, I don't know that you should siscount the Radian out of hand like that - at his age, 1 inch of torso growth is probably easily a year, possibly more....maybe not a whole lot in the grand scheme of things but a year could easily be the difference in maturity he needs to be able to sit in a booster seat correctly, and since you KNOW it is an issue, you could be working on it the whole year, etc...Honestly, I think this might be the easiest/least expensie route...no worrying about tethers, no worrying about findgin a 19 inch apex, just buy the seat and use it while working on maturity and discilpine with your child until he outgrows it, then it is a great RF/FF seat that could be passed down to your other children, especially since it has the 8 yr expiration, it'll be around a LONG time. Or the como/signo option, which would last longer, but is a bit more expensive....

hope you get it worked out.
