My eczema is clearing after years of trouble

I've been on a major roller coaster ride in determining the cause of my daughters eczema/itching/swelling for 2 months now (her first breakout was May 1.)

Since then, I've discovered she's allergic to egg, dairy, and peanut. I've taken these things out of my diet (to the best of my ability.) She clears up and then gets splotchy again so I'm working on adding one food back at a time to my diet.

I just want to say that MY ECZEMA that I've had for YEARS is almost ALL GONE since I've been dairy/egg/peanut free for almost a month.

If my daughter did not have allergies/eczema I NEVER would have eliminated these foods for myself. (I'm doing it because I'm breastfeeding.)

I'm grateful that I'm better, but would trade that for her never to have the problems she's having.

THANKS for listening! Anybody have similar experiences?

I've been gluten and corn free for a month and my eczema has almost completely cleared. I'd seen a dermatologist for over a year to try to get to the root of it. Once we determined it wasn't caused by my skin care products, her only suggestion was steroid cream. When I asked her about a possible dietary cause, she said that food allergies don't cause skin problems except for hives. :

Wow what a dumb dermatologist! But I am not surprised.

My DH thought that his eczema was caused by lotion and soap which he realized is not true since he cut certain food out of his diet and got his gut healing.
I think that eczema has got to be the toughest thing to deal with and to figure out what you are eating is causing it.

I've had eczema for maybe 2 years now. Is it common to develop a food allergy that can cause eczema later in life?! I've found a lotion that helps it a lot (ShiKai borage dry skin therapy), but I'd like to get to the root of the problem.

I now have a 2nd child and she's had some vomiting episodes and I'm not convinced all of her rash is baby acne. I'm wondering if it's something in my diet. :

I actually saw that dermatologist again yesterday for a mole check.

She asked how my eczema was doing while reading through my chart.

I told her that I had some allergy testing done, cut wheat and gluten out of my diet, and it was cleared up within a week.

She was totally silent, then said "good", and moved on to a completely different subject. I hope that next time someone presents with a situation like mine, she might remember.............but somehow I doubt it.

That's very cool

I did have something similar. My dd was getting a red face so we cut dairy to see if that was it. Her red face cleared up and next thing I know my hands cleared up! Of course, long story short, I eventually realized that my gluten intolerance was what was causing it, not the dairy. Now that I've cut gluten I can eat dairy again without eczema (this is sort of common - a lot of gluten sensitive people find that cutting gluten clears up dairy sensitivity and I'm SO glad to be one of them!).

That is so weird that dermatologists don't recognize eczema as related to allergies. I haven't had personal experience with it, but I have a friend whose son gets eczema whenever he eats corn or dairy. It's a direct correlation.

Mine said the same thing. I finally talked her into at least testing me for common allergens. Turns out I'm allegic to wheat. I have been pretty much eczema free since eliminating it from my diet.

Me too!

I had a similar experience. I first eliminated wheat. It helped him some but not all the way. So then I tried eliminating soy. No effect on him, but my excema went away!!! I figured I could keep at it trying to figure out what he was allergic to forever so I ended up having him blood tested. Turned out he was also allergic to yeast, which I hadn't eliminated along with the wheat. Glad I had him tested and that the I benefited from our little experiment.
