I have been doing my research, but personal anecdotes are best.
I have posted here before and am terrible about keeping up with my threads!
:
But I am really freaking out about my dd for this September. She is enrolled and ready to go to the Montessori school she has attended for two years. She is set to move on to elementary with a teacher whose reputation is...shall we say, challenged.
I have talked with parents with children in her room who I respect and they all say the same thing: yes she is off-putting, kind of weird and scary, but she is an excellent teacher.
How is this possible you ask? I don't know. But I feel the same way about her. Like she is all of those things. She's older. Has taught for years...believes in handling tough behavior with tough love...tends to exclude those who do not "tow the line."
Everyone who knows my dd says my dd will have no problems in her class.
But...although I adore the school's family-like atmosphere, I'm not sure where it stands academically. I worked there as a special ed (emergency licensed) teacher last year. And I saw good and bad. You know behind the scenes. Maybe it is TOO laid back if YKWIM!
And as far as elementary, I do not see many kids gravitating toward learning materials. I see them looking busy and avoiding work and the teacher.
YIKES.
I did get a book someone recommended to me here called Montessori Today. Again, I feel as though it presents the IDEAL and I don't necessarily see those things happening at this school.
Plus things are: there are some great families here. It is small enough to be family-like. My dd has blossomed socially and academically in the Children's House...her teacher was rather strict also, but also VERY approachable and could be silly and nurturing. Sigh. Why is this so hard? Why can't I just stick with this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
