Am I gaining too much weight?

Ok, I know you are only supposed to gain like I think 3-6 pounds in the first trimester but I am only at week 10 and I have gained 7 already. Am I over doing it? I never really kept track of my weight gain throughout my other pregnancies but I know with both of them I gained less than 20 pounds. (Babies were at a healthy weight.) But I think I gained a lot of weight in the first trimester and then it kind of tapered off after that. I know that's not text book but now that I am noticing I am getting kind of scared about the fact that I am gaining so much in the first trimester. I know this is the last thing I should be thinking about but I am desperate not to gain too much because I don't want to have to lose a lot after the baby.

DOn't worry about it. You gain what you need. I personally need to eat a lot first trimester to keep from being sick, and tend to gain 10lbs or so...but in the end, I gained only 39lbs each pregnancy, so nothing crazy. And I lost it all after the babies.

I gained 78 lbs with one pregnancy and literally nothing (lost 20 lbs in the first trimester due to m/s and barely gained it back again by the birth) with another and both kids were healthy, full-term, and of normal sizes. I lost the weight and kept it off.

It's really not anything to worry about, but you might want to make sure you have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, etc. so that your body doesn't have to consume a lot of excess calories to get the nutrients it needs, which is what happened with my 78 lb pregnancy.

Everyone is different. If you are smaller to begin with, often your body wants to gain more.

yep. i'm feeling this too. my first pregnancy i gained 35 lbs and lot it within a month with brestfeeding. i'm already feeling that i'm getting heavier and i'm not even at eight weeks yet.

but at this point i'm totally going to eat what i need to to keep from puking and then try and get more active and healthier eating after i stop feeling sick. i'd let yourself do what you need to do for the first trimester and know you will lose the weight after giving birth.

i'm bummed because i had just lost 6 pounds and i ws working out eveyday and eating really well and now all i do is sit on the couch, sit on the bed, puke, and maybe walk a little outside. but, it will come back, right now i'm just adjusting to the whole thing again.

I'm really adjusting, too. I had FINALLY lost 10 lbs of "baby weight" to get me down to 10 lbs OVER pre-pregnancy weight and was feeling pretty good about how I looked. Bought some smaller clothes, packed away the fatty clothes, etc. Now today I can't fit into one of my new pairs of shorts. Grrr. : I just got something of a figure back!!!! I'm not ready for this again. I really like how I look when I'm big and round, but it takes me so long to lose the tummy pooch!! Sorry, I guess this post belongs in the "whine and complain" thread. I guess I'm just hoping to be better about healthy eating and exercise this time, so it's not so hard after the baby comes. In February. When it's freezing and snowing outside and I can't get out for days on end. :

"A Girlfriend's Guide To Pregnancy" is not an MDC Mama kind of book. The author is kind of psychotic about how drugs are good, and doesn't mention a single downside.

I think there is something to be gained from all sources, though, and in this case, the thing I sifted from the rubble was "you gain what you gain, and the amount depends on your body, not a chart."

She went on to say that breastfeeding knocks it all off but the last ten pounds, because nature ensures you don't lose the ability to make milk until you don't need to make milk anymore... and only then will the last bit come off.

Me, I've gained five pounds in five weeks. It's because I keep myself from snacking in normal life through iron control... but for the last week I've felt carsick if my stomach gets empty. So I'm snacking my brains out. I'm snacking entirely on fruit or veggies, and fruit is essentially pure sugar. Yeah, yeah, nutrients and fiber too, but my thighs aren't plumping up from the fiber

In short, I have read over fifty books and countless websites, and the conclusion is we should collectively not fret about what the stupid charts say, because no chart ever had a baby.

PS. Miss Honey... I know exactly what you mean Feb is usually the time I just sew and doze for a month! Whose idea was it to have a BABY?

I wouldn't worry about weight gain at this point either. I know I've gained already, and I'm only 7 weeks. I am so HUNGRY all the time...must be because of nursing while pregnant. And lately my favorite thing to eat is McDonalds. :
