Had the glucose tolerance test talk...

And, it really was no big deal.

MW and I briefly discussed it at my first appointment, along with a laundry list of things that would make this preg and birth more like a home vs a hospital birth.

At first the nurse came in with the sugar drink and was giving me instructions for my next appointment (they let you take it home and drink it on the way in). Right away I stopped her, and she was like, oh, ok, discuss it with the mw.

MW came in and said sorry, it was noted in the chart...but not too many mothers actually think enough to refuse it. But, its a protocol she has to offer.

No biggie at all. I agreed to monitor my urine, and have a fasting glu and a post meal one done. I dont mind doing that at all.

We also discussed my last appointment with another mw and how I was upset that she commented on my early check out plans...and she said, well, thats why you page me when you go into labor.

As much as I dont want to be back in a hospital, she is really trying to meet me halfway with a laid back, but still somewhat medicalized approach. She caught ds, and I wasnt touched, monitored, bothered etc til I told her I was ready to push. My comfort level with her was reaffirmed today!

That's great news! I hope things continue to go well for you with her and that you can manage to avoid the other MWs in her practice. It sounds like she's totally willing to work with your needs and desires to help you have the birth you want and deserve

Sounds great! I'm glad that things are going well for you.

I'm not having the same luck...I mentioned to DH what I thought of the glucose test and he can't support me. He doesn't see the harm in it. So I will be getting it done.

My OB doesn't do it until 28 weeks though...so I still have a little while.

I am chooseing to do the test this time, did NOT with T.

I still have no risk factors ... but am using and OB and would rather save me "refuals and resistance" for later and bigger things.... I don't wanna but i know it won't hurt me, and i know i will pass with flying colors, soooooo really I'll save "being diffuclt" for other things.....

I hear you Aimee...I'm probably in a similar boat.

I looove my OB. I see no reason to fight about it.

is it necessary, nope

is it gonna hurt me, nope

am i gonna like it, nope

But.......in the spirit of working together.... i am willing to do this non-invasive test that has no effect on the baby.....so in the sprirt of working together i can ask him to give more later .. like money in the bank, kinda.

However we didn't do it last time, and if i were working iwht a differnt provider in a differnt setting, i would refuse it this time too -- and i totally support each mom's CHOICE to take the GTT or not......i am chooseing to take it for reasons other than the test itself (the good feeling on my OB and the one less thing to ask off).......still a choice IMO.

I kind of see it as invasive and harmful, straight sugar equal to 4 candy bars on an empty stomach while pregnant!?

I wouldn't do that to me in real life, let alone while preg with a growing baby. To me its just not a reasonable test - never would I load my body that full so why do it? I'm not so sure it has no effect on the baby either. That much sugar makes me shake, so how can it not make the baby a bit off either? The thought of it makes me green. I puked it all up with ds, and had to do a repeat...which I only got a few oz down.

Funny how different we all consider battles, eh?

I hear some ob/mw offer a jellybean option instead of the drink...you might want to consider that option! :

I'm doing the jellybeans- I broached the idea of skipping it, but since I'm a little overweight and do have some diabetes in my family, they didn't seem to keen on the idea. But they said 100 Brach's jellybeans will work- I can do that

does anyone have any documentation on this -- somethingi can print out and take with me to the OB tomrorrow -- the test is actually in 4 weeks, but tomorrow is the day they give me the stuff (so i can drink it before i get there in Aug) and so tomorrow is when i would need to "change the plan"

I'd much rather do THAT than drink the stuff my sis says is yucky (she has had it 3 times, in cluding th e4 hours test)........

I'll be drinking the orange stuff. My midwife actually told me today to have a high protein meal before taking the drink - definitely no empty stomach, but not a lot of carbs since the drink has plenty.

Yup, normally you should be fasting...Id personally be leary of taking anything else in that am that could have sugar in it, or be converted to sugar. I've never heard of eating before it...I think it kind of defeats the purpose.

couldn't eating actually mess up the results -- give you more carbs than indended -- or even just effect the results.....

like my Ped told not to wait on teh PUK test cuz the results are graded based on a new born and if the child was older the results could come back as abnormal when they weren't cuz of the "grading system"

wouldn't eating effect the GTT test the same???
