I was hoping that someone had some suggestions for a recommended reading list for my daughter. I was looking into some Montessori programs and may put her in one when she is 3.

Is your daughter reading on her own, or do you wish to read to her. If you want to read to her, anything that keeps her attention. At this age, I believe the point of reading to them is to show them that reading is enjoyable. If she's reading on her own and you're looking into a Montessori education, it's all about phonics. The "Bob Books" are excellent for very beginners. They seem very simplistic, but they are phonically based, and come in very short, easy to read books. The child can begin and finish a book in a very short time which instills a sense of accomplishment.

reading suggestions...
There are a lot of beautiful books about science, geography, animals, botany that we have gotten from our public library, the series is by scholastic called the "Rookie Read About" series. My dd who is 6 goes to a Montessori preschool, and although she is not reading independantly, the photographs and text in these little books (and the length,, about 5 minutes or less) are just exactly right for young children. Non fiction books in general tend to be so wordy with so few interesting pictures that I was thrilled when her directress recommended these, in addition to the many beautifully illustrated picture books that are commonly part of a young childs library. We also enjoyed these little books by Anne (I think) Morris or McMillan who does these beautiful photographic books of people from many culures called "Bread, Bread, Bread" and "Shoes, Shoes, Shoes". And the beautiful photograph "concept" books by Tana Hoban, and also all of Brian Wildsmiths books. We love books!
