carob chips are made from carob which is a bean with a flavor somewhat similar to cocoa. But the melt in cookies and I have found that they don't work so well in this way. Better to go with the real thing.
I don't usually use a cookbook, just wing it. I always cook/bake with organic ingredients.
Here is what I would add:
-3/4 cup canola oil OR spectrum naturals shortening
-1 cup cane sugar
-1 Tbsp baking powder
-small pinch of salt
-enough flour to make the dough quite stiff.
